- Not the HMV freebie, ‘Playlist’ is a label compilation put together by Jazzanova, containing flavours of Latin, bossa, jazz, soul and deep house persuasions. The major selling points are the presence of eight tracks ‘first to CD’, and the pairing of JCR’s established acts with some worthy newcomers. The familiar names - Koop, Victor Davies, The Underwolves for example – do not disappoint. The Underwolves’ lilting ‘Birdsong’ appears here, and of the two Koop tracks, ‘Summer Sun’ is a perfect marriage of sultry vocals and breezy horn section. Victor Davies’ soulful opener is an ideal getting up song. In less familiar territory we find ‘Darkest Day’ from Nemo, Yukihiro Fukutomi’s keyboard dazzler ‘I Am’ and a fat bass to underpin Nu Spirit Helsinki’s ‘Love Bossa’.
This might be an expensive buy, as some of you will doubtless want to experience more Compost sounds as a result. Mind you, you’re much better off getting this than yet another soulless chillout compilation!
