- Techno has always been a more "serious" counterpoint to house music. But it's by no means less emotional. Just ask Israeli Guy Gerber, whose recent show at Warung in Brazil saw him playing his deep techno to an adoring crowd. It was Gerber's first show at the club, and it was on the eve of the Easter holiday in the country—which meant that it fell during a week of hard partying that saw Sharam also play at Warung and Luciano and the "Vagabundos" crew at Green Valley. It was a typical autumn night with mild temperatures and the club was full by the time that Gerber took over from resident local DJ Daniel Kuhnen at 3 AM. He played tracks from his upcoming album like "Song for Dana," as well as classics like "Hate/Love" and "Timing," the latter of which went over extremely well.
The Warung Garden, which during the summer season had been consolidated as the second and alternative dance floor of the club, was being treated to the sounds of local project Old Is Cool, which basically consists of people playing sets composed solely of massive classics. Most, however, remained locked into Gerber, who played five hours of vigorous and, at the same time, subtle techno. Unexpected vocals, very long breaks, elements of jazz, all of it dosed with lightness, made his set a delight. A creative and prolific producer, Gerber is one of the few producers that has enough material to pull this sort of variety off. What made this night special was how well he did so.
