Built in 1936 as a canteen for Dutch market traders, De Marktkantine has a dynamic history in music, theatre and food within Amsterdam. It was restructured in 1950 as a theatre and functioned as a club in the 90’s when the dance scene began to evolve in The Netherlands. After a period of vacancy a group of Amsterdam local entrepeneurs re-opened the venue in 2014.
Recently renovated, the building itself maintains its historical essence with an artistic flair. Upon entering you are met with artwork by a local painter; this is in effort to continue the legacy of De Marktkantine as a creative combination of music, art, food and events.
The 3000 square feet building offers an array of dance areas and stages. The big theatre room can fit roughly 1200 people, while the smaller room offers 300 visitors a more intimate setting.
