Melbourne-based DJ and label owner Daniel Filipovic is one the few remaining Australian DJs avidly supporting vinyl culture. A proud record collector since the ‘90s, familiar Ikea Expedits store Filipovic’s sorted collection of 12”s, 10”s, 7”s and obs..
A purveyor of deep house, esoteric minimal, early ‘00s tech house and hypnotic techno, Filipovic’s penchant for long DJ sets began in 2005 as guest resident for the Phonographed parties at e55 alongside Lance Harrison & Mark Baumann, while more recently warming and closing the Melbourne editions of parties thrown by the music blog TEA, in addition to local festivals & parties such as Stereosonic, Gr0ove and Locals, a night he runs with fellow label owner Paul Cooper of Sub Squared.
In 2006 Daniel co-founded the Pinksilver Music label together with Lance and Mark (better known as the Echo Inspectors of the Primary Colours label), firstly as a fledgling netlabel, then as both a digital & limited edition vinyl imprint, giving artists a platform and to release their music. To complement the label's musical output, Daniel hosted the Pinksilver Music edition of Drowned in Sound on Kiss FM Melbourne for seven years together with DJ Matic.
In 2011 Pinksilver released the three-volume Various artist series entitled Twenty4, which showcased a broad spectrum of Australian talent that included Deepchild, Craig McWhinney, Michelle Owen, Andy Hart, Trinity & Beyond and Markojux, amongst others. The label followed this up with EPs from international artists Klartraum and Tonepushers, while Trinity & Beyond’s 2012 Reign EP featured a remix from Sistrum and Echocord contributor XDB.
More recently Filipovic has begun curating his own vinyl-only imprint focusing on hypnotic techno and electronic sounds called Southern Lights - again with a focus on Australian talent and friends from abroad. First release is set to drop in early 2016 with a Craig McWhinney EP and Eric Cloutier remix, followed by a Ground Loop EP with PVS and Fabrizio Lapiana remixes, and a debut EP by Adelaide-based DRYAD, complete with Annulled User and Michal Wolski reworks.
Boundaries between electronica, house & techno become blurred - an experience Daniel shares with party goers at label nights & beyond.
