Spacid started collecting music from an early age and played occasionally on weddings and block parties. His first influences were Synthesizer Greatest (Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis …) and new wave club Class.X (Front 242, Depeche Mode, …), later welcoming Belgium’s New Beat craze and early Chicago House.
Spacid’s first steps playing in front of a public dates back to 1990, while being a resident dj at Le Café in Kortrijk. There, once settled behind his trusty Technics, he played all the early electronic music the dance culture had to offer in those days.
Together with some friends, Spacid organized his first parties in 1992. These turned out to be a big success and paved the way to setting up the club Carioca. He was only 17 then. The club was short-lived but is still remembered as one of the most legendary and trendsetting clubs in Belgium.
In 1994 Spacid founded Funky Green Aliens, also known as FGA, a party organization and booking agency. Their mission? Promoting groundbreaking music & arts and introducing international artists to the Belgian scene. It were creative times. The underground and experimental scene were blooming and electronical music made a vivid entrance in Belgium. Spacid’s, mostly illegal organized, parties with the FGA-collective were a great success. To this day these blowouts represent Spacid’s true roots; he was well known for his sharp, quirky and energizing techno sets.
By 1997 Spacid’s name started popping up in all major Belgian clubs and events. And he was propelled to slots at the hottest clubs and parties in Belgium. He also became resident at various important party concepts such as the legendary Body 2 Body parties at Culture Club, Beats of Love, Lazerdance, Elektron, Retro Acid and Ultra.
In 2001 Spacid starts working in Ghent’s most prominent record shop: Music Man. As a member of the procurement team he handled the more experimental leftfield releases. That way he influenced many fellow dj’s and music lovers.
2003 was the year that Spacid gave Radius Records its first big exposure. As the label boss he brought out the mix compilation “Theme From Radius”. The label’s goal was to seek and explore the foundations of the electronic influences of the 70’s and 80’s italo disco. This to highlight its innovative aspect, but also its importance in today’s electronic dance music. The label played a pioneering role in the modern new disco sound and offered a platform for unknown producers like Tensnake and Moonlight Matters. During that time, Spacid also traveled around Europe to fire up dancefloors with these disco sounds.
Spacid has a nose for creativity and is an early adopter. He’s constanly on the watch for renewal and his evolution sets him above all trends. He can easily be regarded as a pioneer in early house, techno and electro. This attitude makes him a resourceful dj you can find playing various genres.
Spacid is also a regular guest at both Belgian and international events. He played at 10 Days Off 7 times, I love techno 4 Times and elevated the dancefloor of Tomorrowland 10 times. He performed at Pukkelpop, House Torhout, Dance Valley and the Lokerse Feesten, but also hiked the crowd of the more alternative Voltage Festival.
He burned the floor at festivals and clubs in France, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Poland and Malta. He manned the decks in British clubs and parties like Club Trash, Herbal, The Key, House of God, Death disco and played in some of the Netherlands best known clubs like Paradiso, Club 013, Melkweg, Effenaar and Doornroosje. He was even invited at the Berlin Weekend club and Paris’s “Respect is Burning”.
Spacid was present at an impressive amount of clubs, parties and festivals in and out of the country (you can find an overview at www.spacid.be/history)
Today he is resident at Kozzmozz, Belgium’s number 1 techno party. And even though he’s part of this legendary celebration for ages, his Retro Acid Residency is in the running even longer.
Spacid is promoting techno since the early 90’s but never ties down to one particular style. He thinks outside the box and takes you to a variety of moods. His creative touch is owned by himself and is never a cheap copy. Both his reverence for the past and his quest for innovation transpire in his work as a dj. His thirst for renewal is illuminated by his passion for music, which keeps him sharp.
Spacid has a colourful 26 years of dj-ing experience. And it shows! He understands how to adapt a range of atmospheres depending on the venue, people and mood. And all this without ever renouncing his roots and musical beliefs.
It’s safe to say that Spacid is an established value in the Belgian underground club circuit and we haven’t heard the last of him yet.
But hey, this was all in the precedent. And we love the past, but the future is brighter. The best is yet to come and the road ahead is a joyful unwritten path. Or, as Spacid would say: “Love the past, play the future”.
