A brilliant and inimitable producer, Emalkay refuses to define himself by anything other than his own musical evolution. From his early years producing grime and garage, right through to 2011 and the imminent release of debut album Eclipse, he has continued to break new ground and move forward with each and every track he makes. Picking at genres like so many pieces of abandoned litter, their influence twist through his soundscapes of urban desolation to create a dubstep-not-dubstep which embraces musical risks, moving far beyond the limitations of its parent genre.
After catching the attention of South London label Boka Records in 2006 with single Gut Feeling, things blew up for him at the end of 2009 when When I Look At You, his second release on Caspa's Dub Police imprint, was not only chosen as single of the week by BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, 1Xtra's MistaJam and The Guardian but supported by the scene's major DJs and tastemakers, becoming a staple track of the best sets. Not content with producing one of the biggest underground anthems of the year, he also set about producing some carefully chosen remixes - Faithless, Miike Snow, Pendulum - and, in doing so, opening up his sound to a whole new audience, taking his DJ sets around the US and Canada (twice), as well as smashing major festivals and the Dub Police nights at Fabric on a regular basis.
His new album, to be released on Dub Police this summer, sums up his last few years of music evolution, exploring rhythmic, compositional and sonic qualities with the unmistakeable air of a truly innovative musical scientist.
