By now many of you have heard about whats happening every Wednesday in Ferndale. The old Gracies Underground, newly redesigned and called The Grasshopper Underground, is known for its awesome house music. We are carrying on this tradition every Wednesday with the series called STIMULUS!
(2/22) This Week:
Ataxia is a condition that causes temporary loss of muscle control. The name is suiting for Ted Krisko and Eric Hanna’s Detroit dance music duo, given their penchant for late night and early morning productions and performances. From their beginnings as party promoters and their deep roots touring in punk bands, Ataxia continue to set themselves apart from a world where anyone can be a dj. Their live sets boast a huge array of analogue and digital equipment, while their extended DJ sets have carried the torch for Detroit’s next wave of emerging artists.
A chance meeting in 2008 at a music store in the middle of Michigan is what gave birth to Ted and Eric’s partnership. Krisko was asked to play drums in a punk band in which Ricker was the bassist. Sharing experiences producing and promoting electronic music events, their shared passion for electronic music lead to developing their sound to stray away from rock to dance music with punk undertones and attitude.
While working with promoter outfit Detek, Ted and Eric produced many noteworthy events such as Crosstown’s Rebel Rave, The Leftroom Tour as well as the original I Love You But I’ve Chosen Techno Party during the Movement Festival. The spring of 2011 saw the duo’s departure from the promoter’s roster as they hung up their promoter spurs to spend all of their available time in the studio.
Krisko and Ricker now reside as label bosses for the long-standing record label D Records. The label was originally founded between Richie Hawtin and a select group of local producers, but is now under the watchful eye of Paxahau’s Jason Huvaere and his team. They continue the mission of bringing Detroit talent to light to the international dance music community.
The boys are poised for their first slew of releases on their own label, D, as well as a release coming up on good friend Michelle Punisher’s label, Hej. Ataxia also has multiple podcasts that have been well received, most notably their most recent mix for podcast kings Protonradio.com, their Shxt Show Deuce podcast for Gary Springs Hunting Club available at GSHCUSA.ORG as well as their Autobrennt.com Mix of the Week.
In just a few short years Ataxia have broke ground at a surprising pace. Energetic performances at the 2011 Movement Festival, 2010 WMC in Miami, as well as countless after-parties and support slots for their favorite artists have taken them in front of global audiences, while also consistently maintaining their profile in their hometown. 2012 promises to be a busy year as Ataxia begins to release it’s music to those eager to hear what’s next from the city that started it all.
