BAD BLOOD RECORDS is the creative umbrella of avant-garde international-touring party monster Naeem Juwan, a.k.a. SPANK ROCK (the Sonic Youth of the rap-game)
Originally hailing from Denver, Colorado, Pictureplane (real name Travis Egedy) was a driving force in making the city one of the most influential DIY towns in the world; thanks in large part to Pictureplane’s legendary shows at his former Denver home Rhinoceropolis, his raging club night, “Real is a Feeling”, and his constant stream of mixtapes and remixes. In 2012 he moved to Brooklyn, NY and quickly established himself as one of the figureheads of a revitalized electronic/punk scene. Egedy’s growing influence can be felt in ways that are both trivial - Egedy coined the ridiculous genre term “Witch House” in 2009 - and significant: Pictureplane’s punk rock-like approach to the production and dissemination of his work is democratizing electronic music the same way the Ramones, Minor Threat, and Black Flag liberated rock music in the 70s and 80s.
Produced and recorded by Egedy and mixed/co-produced by Jupiter Keyes of HEALTH, his 2011 record Thee Physical is a celebration of human touch in a digital world. The album is also unquestionably Pictureplane’s best and most assured record to date: his vocals are confident and unnervingly sexy, the instrumentation is at once both purely electronic and surprisingly human. Pictureplane has managed to make electronic music deeply emotive—a synthesis of the human and the machine both in lyrics and sound.
“Brilliant? Yes. The guy has true production and compositional skills and has found a uniquely compelling way to merge a deep blend house, noise, synth pop, darkwave, psychedelia, world music, and trippy new age space-time theories into emotionally compelling soundscapes.”
“Pictureplane, a one-man knob-twiddler…might succeed where many others have failed: making shiny, thumping, ecstasy-appropriate dance music palatable to indie fans whose comfort with electronic jams extends about as far as Hot Chip or Girl Talk.”
- ONION A/V CLUB
“Colorado art-guy Pictureplane packs a ridiculous amount of contagious energy into this club ready debut. This is music for a new-age junkyard rave: stinky, sweaty, and way too much fun.”
Everyone loves Jubilee. How could they not? The girl is full of positive vibes, from her bubbly DJ sets to her smiley demeanor. She's long been known as "Brooklyn's bass sweetheart," but she's also an ace DJ, one who can capably move between upfront bass music, sweaty tropical jams, party rap, UK grime, house, techno, R&B, dancehall, and more.
Stylistically, Jubilee may be hard to pin down, but she's always been a girl on the move, both literally and figuratively. Growing up in South Florida, she immersed herself in the region's rave culture, dancing the night away at underground breaks parties while spending her days soaking up Miami bass on the radio. Eventually she made the move to NYC, where she quickly infiltrated the DJ circuit with her sticky grooves and comprehensive knowledge of all things bass.
These days, she's still a regular behind the decks at various clubs and warehouse parties around the globe, but she also teams up with Mixpak label boss and serious badman Dre Skull to put on a banging party of their own called Mixpak Extended Play. Beyond that, she's even managed to take her talents to the airwaves, hosting her own weekly show called Fireworks on Brooklyn Radio in addition to Mixpak’s new show on Radio Lily.
As if she wasn't busy enough already, Jubilee has somehow found the time to steadily increase her workload as a producer. Last year saw the release of her Pop It! EP via Mixpak, and she just recently dropped a collaborative record with frequent partner-in-crime Star Eyes via the white-hot Unknown to the Unknown imprint. Throw in remixes of Canblaster, Hydraulix, Creep, and Zuzuka Poderosa, and it's easy to say the Jubilee is quickly becoming a go-to producer, particularly when artists need to inject their tunes with some infectious energy and dancefloor flavor.
Much like X-Men character from whom she takes her name, Jubilee has got fireworks up her sleeve. We're just lucky that she's elected to use her powers for the good of dance parties everywhere.
