Rheji Burrell, Don Play
a dance party celebrating the golden era of house + disco
Welcome to SIMPLY PARADISE, a new series of intimate dance parties where the focus is on bringing the legends of early house and disco to North Carolina to play records. The focus is classic dance tracks and the DJ's who spin them — past/present/future.
Your role in this social contract is to enjoy yourself, and dance.
We are extremely lucky to feature NJ/NY house music LEGEND Rheji Burrell as our inaugural guest DJ.
From his early days as the duo "Burrell" on Virgin Records with his twin brother Rhano, and later as the driving force behind the iconic Nu Groove label, and next under various aliases for Citi, Nervous, and Bottom Line Records, among others — you'd be hard-pressed to find a more PROLIFIC source of the genre-defining NY/NJ house sound of the late 80's and early 90's.
If that weren't enough, Rheji and Rhano went on to produce RIAA certified Multi Platinum Sales award Hits with the likes of Sean "Diddy" Combs, Aaliyah, Dame Dash, Heavy D., LA Reid, Jellybean Benitez and Clive Davis.
All things in life come full circle, though. Interest in the Burrell back catalog has been swirling for some time on the secondhand record market and in DJ sets across the globe. This past May, it was announced that mega-label Defected has acquired the legal rights to the Nu Groove catalog, which will finally give Rheji's original tracks a proper (and legal) re-release on vinyl. Of course, for many house DJ's, the original copies never left their rotation to begin with.
Rheji will be joined by Simply Paradise's resident host and DJ, Don Play (www.djdonplay.com). Don has been changing records for 20 years in Boston, Detroit, New York, Cleveland, and now North Carolina. He is the host of a 2-hour weekly radio show, "The Dance Megamix with Don Play," on Carrboro's community radio station, WCOM-LP 103.5 FM.
