Jelle Spruyt Vernissage
Jelle Spruyt - ceci n'est pas une route avec cyprès et ciel étoilé
Jelle Spruyt is a versatile Antwerp-based artist. He primarily works with textiles and different day-to-day objects, combining textures such as fabric, plastic, thread and wires to create sculptures , masks and assemblages. He values the concept of recycling. The different objects he uses, such as plastic cutlery, a garden hose or fishing bobbers, are placed into a completely new environment. He elevates these objects to a higher function by studying their colors and textures, disconnecting them from their former context and allowing them to tell their own, new story- a story that may vary from one interpretation to the next. Spruyt's work is as inviting as it is compelling, guiding the spectators eye to discover surprising associations. He also likes to keep the respective space in mind in which his work is presented, making sure his sculptures correlate to their environments.
Spruyt looks for his own representation of society. Using an abstract approach, he shows us the essence of a certain object or impression. For the current show at Observatorium 'ceci n'est pas une route avec cyprès et ciel étoilé' he looks at the 1920's allyes and narrow streets of China's big cities, where the eye is never at ease. Although the artist can only rely on black and white photography, the image we has about the orient combined with Spruyts unlimited fascination for mixing colors and materials leads to a new universe that will mainly pull our attention upwards.
