Scruff is someone who loves to play for as long as possible, mix up lots of different styles of music and pays particular attention to his sound, with vinyl a speciality. What's not to love?!?
Come and join us for Mr Scruff all night long at Melting Pot.
Mr Scruff - DJ, Producer, Cartoonist & Tea Drinker
A lot of things have happened since a young Andy Carthy started answering to the name Mr Scruff - making a name for himself under the shadow of Manchester's mid 90s club scene. Not only has he released five critically acclaimed albums on Ninja Tune, selling over half a million records worldwide, with countless tours and club events he has cemented his now legendary DJ status. This is a DJ that can sell out the 1600 capacity London KOKO armed only with his records, some turntables and a few spare packets of teabags.
As a DJ, he plays across the board, including Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Reggae, Dubstep, Latin, African, Ska, Disco, House, Funk, Breaks, Soundtracks & loads more. As a producer he makes music that draws on these influences, with a large dose of cheek & good humour. His cartoon drawings illustrate his website, gig flyers & record/cd covers.
Scruff has been DJing since the mid 90s and serious record collector for years before. His production work saw to more DJ work with the likes of Grand Central, and also radio shows too. His signing to Ninja Tune led to overseas gigs with Ninja's roster of artists like Roots Manuva, The Herbaliser and Mixmaster Morris.
His debut LP on Ninja Tune in, Keep it Unreal, was a huge international success in 1999 and inspired a new club night of the same name where he would play the entire night himself at the Music Box in Manchester. Instead of playing 2 hour guest slots at other clubs Scruff would recreate Keep it Unreal and play all night. He would also assume control of the sound and lighting to ensure it was as close to his monthly residency as possible at all his guest slots.
It's now 19 years since the start of Keep it Unreal and it's still going strong monthly in Manchester, and at clubs all over the world!
4am finish is subject to license.
