Cool Room celebrate three colourful years with two rising stars from Copenhagen plus one of Melbourne's most talented exports.
It’s been hard to keep our lips sealed about this one, but now the secret’s out! We’re turning three and we’d like to present to you three of our favourites at our newly renovated home of 24 Moons Bar.
We have two international artists that have absolutely slayed the world over, and it wouldn’t be a Coolie birthday without Kate Miller, our long distance supporter, inspiration, and friend. There’s a new ceiling, better sound (think fuller, louder and harder) and there will be a larger-than-life birthday cake to make it an ~extra special~ occasion.
Courtesy's eclectic-yet-focused approach to DJing is one deeply indebted to her home turf of Copenhagen. The Danish capital has a thriving scene – tight-knit and community-focused – which is rife with hard, fast techno. Copenhagen DJs have a reputation as deep diggers who are comfortable pushing tempos well past 140bpm, drawing heavily from 90s techno and unearthed rave. Courtesy heads Ectotherm alongside Mama Snake, focused on storming contemporary techno, spotlighting local artists and featuring mixes from local DJs on their monthly NTS Radio show. The scene is blossoming and Courtesy is undeniably a leading light in the region.
Living out her childhood in Greenland, Courtesy puts a unique spin on the trademark CPH sound. While her selections lay on the harder and faster side of the techno sphere, they come from a broad palette – she dashes between hi-tech bass and breaks, wild rave, tough electro, and lightspeed Danish techno. Her record collection is explicitly club-focused and geared for dance floors, as she expertly walks the tightrope of balancing experimentalism and functionality in her sets.
MAMA SNAKE (Ectotherm, Apeiron Crew)
Mama Snake is a serpent with many heads. Her contributions to the Copenhagen scene are multifold: she curates STRØM, a Danish festival promoting the scene with events, workshops and education; plays b2b2b in the three-woman army, Apeiron Crew , alongside Solid Blake and Smokey; and of course runs Ectotherm alongside Courtesy. As for the label, Mama Snake’s ethos centres on working with friends and people that she respects personally and musically.
A versatile DJ, Mama Snake pays proper attention to line-up and setting when she prepares for a party. Her sets are centred around techno and rave – a considered mix of floor-filling physical stompers, alongside heady, psychedelic, even hypnotic tracks. While her sound is heavy, loaded with thunderous kicks and high-impact hats, it maintains levity through an affinity for melody, emotion, and the unexpected. Mama always has a few surprises in store!
KATE MILLER (Oscillate)
Kate Miller is always ahead of the curve. She moved to Berlin in 2011 (before the rest of Melbourne followed), breaking out primarily as a house DJ at legendary club Stattbad before extending her tendrils further. She is now curator and resident at quarterly Berlin party Oscillate, booking talented up-and-comers alongside established international titans. Kate is a radio regular alongside Johanna Knutsson, broadcasting electronic explorations as Low Power FM and airwave club journeys as High Power FM. Kate’s DJ sets are guided by feeling rather than genre, she’s got a strong inclination towards forward-thinking sound, and taking dancers as far as they can go.
After Kate blew our minds with three-hours of hi-nrg techno at our 2nd birthday last year, we’re excited to welcome her back in a rare ‘Low Power FM’ guise, soundtracking the early hours of the evening with an ambient excursion before moving uptempo from there.
