Something Else get the city warmed up for Mardi Gras with a Parisian favourite's first Australian show in nearly a decade.
Saturday February 24th we bring you the 2 room Mardis Gras edition of Something gay. A jovial or happy, good-spirited musical gathering where we welcome all walks of life to showcase the best Homo-Dj talent Sydney has to offer in the world of House and Techno.
Jennifer Cardini (Correspondant / FR)
After more than a decade spent building an enviable reputation for herself in the clubs of Paris, Jennifer Cardini has become an international concern. Her infectious charisma and versatility behind the decks has led to invitations to play at such famed nightspots as Panorama Bar, Nitsa, Concrete and Fabric, and with her creative platform and label Correspondant very much on the ascent, her standing as a taste maker is as prominent as ever.
Matt Vaughan (Loose Ends)
Brainchild and resident DJ behind one of Sydney's most revered queer parties, Loose Ends, which recently clocked 11 years on the block and is burning bigger and brighter than ever.
Through Loose Ends Matt has been instrumental in bringing together generations of dancers who enjoy their nightlife left of centre and deeply diverse. His sets are filled with personality and warmth and are as diverse and eclectic as the crowds he plays for, taking in everything from house and techno, disco and funk, hip hop and soul. He can go from pop to industrial before you can say "we don't need this fascist groove thang". Nothing is out of bounds and everything fits just right.
Magda Bytnerowicz (4our)
Since 2006 Sydney-based Magda Bytnerowicz has been solidifying her credentials as DJ with a deft touch, capable of warming up a room for fanatic house heads or closing it after techno gods and garnering warm respect as a peak slot spinner in her own right. As a DJ she’s been increasing her cachet as the go-to support when a considered, nuanced approach is required. This has included slots with the likes of Derrick May, Steffi, DVS1, Nick Höppner, Steven Tang, Pantha du Prince, Tama Sumo, Jacob Korn, DJ Spider, Red Rack’em, Patrice Scott, Jamie 3:26, Rick Wilhite and more.
Her style varies from the dissonant melodies of down-tempo electronica, to the purest depths of tech house. She is a sure-fire floor-filler, with a style perfectly matched to suit any dance floor, which explains why she has featured on Triple J’s, “The Kick On”, FBi Radio’s “Spin The Bottle”, JOY FM in Melbourne as well as being asked to appear on SOHO radio in London.
Getting lost in deep, hypnotic, minimal grooves is the primary force behind Val York’s track selection. She promotes authenticity, equality & embraces the darker, uncanny corners of electronic music. As an active Sydney artist, Val York celebrates all forms of artistic expression & is consistently pushing boundaries.
The Sydney-based DJ who's been forging his way through his hometown and abroad for the past eight years. His musical specialties are classic disco and nu-disco, different incarnations of House, kooky producer-based pop, down-tempo grooves and the alternative queer scene. Highlights from his career include a 3-hour closing set at Mardi Gras’ Laneway Party, two performances at Glastonbury Festival (UK), one at Secret Garden Festival, and some big supports for the likes of Alison Wonderland and Stanton Warriors. He’s also responsible for last summer’s weekly outdoor queer Sundays, Stranded, in the Newtown Hotel courtyard and he’s gearing up to do his first set at the Mardi Gras Party this year.
Found making noise in Sydney's late night funk squats and disco dens. His unique style of electronica influenced soul house will have you making a dance floor prayer.
QUILTBAG house, funk and disco vibes.
Equal parts moved by classic house and throbbing techno as he is by Whitney Houston or a symphony orchestra, Hirschy's ear has always leaned towards the eclectic. He still has trouble following directions and colouring inside the lines--a recipe for disaster IRL, but a winning combination behind the decks. Mischief guaranteed.
Something gay bearded banana eating top dog.
