OCTO OCTA (live)
New York based deep house patriot Octo Octa has logged some serious miles. Whether it’s been as a fringe IDM artist and sound designer or flexing live sets and DJ gigs worldwide; her meticulously-sculpted sonics and primal dance-floor functionality had earned her a Red Bull Music Academy residency in Manhattan - where she worked closely with Harald Bjork and Throwing Snow – as well as tours across the world that included coveted gigs at Berlin's Panorama Bar, Frankfurt's Live At Robert Johnson, and Barcelona's Sonar Festival.
Her 12-inches for labels like Deepblak and 100% Silk had a subtlety and mysteriousness unusual for a house artist, earning her accolades from beyond dance music's usual echo chamber. Then, in April of last year, she released what can comfortably be described as a breakthrough record, Where Are We Going?. Arriving on HNYTRX, the label arm of the queer American party crew Honey Soundsystem, Where Are We Going? is a lush and dynamic LP that moves as nimbly through musical styles as it does through emotional states, weaving house, techno and the occasional breakbeat into a richly personal artistic statement. The record is her first since she came out as trans last year, and contains, in her words, "an overtly queer message with the narrative built around it" — not bad for a completely instrumental house LP.
Very able support on the night from Kali, Andy Garvey and Jemma Cole
