From Thursday to Sunday, 16–19 August, urban dance festival Summer Dance Forever and pop venue Paradiso will be joining forces to bring you the first‑ever edition of Amsterdam Soul Weekender – four club nights jam‑packed with soulful, electronic dance music. There will be performances from Atjazz, DJ Deep, DJ Spinna, Ge-ology, IG Culture, Volcov and many others. Ticket sales start Tuesday, 01 June at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster.
Amsterdam Soul Weekender spans a wide range of soulful dance music genres – most of which have roots in black culture, e.g. afro, boogie funk, broken beat, disco, hip‑hop and house – all presented by leading, ground-breaking artists. As pioneers in their respective sub-genres, they excel in showcasing their distinct sound against the backdrop of electronic music from which they emerged.
Summer Dance Forever is holding its urban dance festival and Amsterdam Soul Weekender events simultaneously. Whereas most other electronic music festivals and nightclubs generally tend to focus on the artists and their presentation, Amsterdam Soul Weekender will be spotlighting the origins of clubbing, namely the intimate interplay between the music and the clubbers themselves.
Each of the four club nights will have its own signature theme centring on the scenes from which the artists originate. For instance, Thursday, 16 August will be an afro-tech, deep house special with Atjazz, Waajeed et al., while Friday, 17 August will home in on boogie, disco and funk with performances by Butufunk (Trian Kayhatu & Azteka), DJ Spinna and Ge-ology. Saturday, 18 August will shift the focus to house and disco with DJ Deep, Volcov and much more, and last, but by no means least, IG Culture and his Selectors Assemble will be presenting an evening of broken beat and house on Sunday, 19 August.
