Feeding on from parties in London, Manchester and Oxford, we are super excited to dance in Bristol for the first time. Joining us at The Island are brothers in rave Tessela and Truss, bringing their big-hitting techno sound as Overmono to the cells. Bass music support will be provided by the highly talented Happa and local boss Ifeoluwa.
Overmono (Tessela & Truss)
~ Overmono [ XL Recordings ]
Poised between sounds retrospective and future, 2013’s ‘Hackney Parrot’, the first release on Tessela’s own Poly Kicks imprint, was the leading track during a re-focus on 90s UK rave sounds that’s going strong to this day. Dark prince of the breakbeat revival, Tessela has consistently contributed standout peak-time dance tracks sitting in the sweet spot between techno, hardcore, and UKG/dubstep-led bass sounds, his recent ‘Glisten’ on Whities being a particular tip.
His older brother, Truss, takes on the rave sound with a greater techno focus. In the game since the late 2000s, his stripped-back releases on Perc Trax and Our Circula Sound promote an exposed and raw warehouse sound that, whilst hard, is gripping: bare-bones 90s rave techno with a modern flavour.
Overmono is their collaborative project, and their main focus since launching on XL Recordings in 2016. The rave sound still sits at the heart of the project, resulting in a steady stream of completely banging tracks and remixes that are equally suited to shut down both a very big or very small room. Will sound very big inside the cells!
~ Happa [ PT/5 Records ]
Happa wrote his breakthrough track, ‘Boss’, aged 14, which began circulating on the internet in 2012. Kickstarting a crazy rise to the top of the dance music game, he soon had a track out on R&S, a remix commissioned by Four Tet, and by 2014 his own label, PT/5. Meanwhile he was too young to legally attend clubs, and had to be accompanied by an adult to sets. Startling facts about age aside, and you are left with a sensationally mature producer with an acute sensitivity to UK bass sounds and making dancefloors move. A must see for all techno enthusiasts!
~ Ifeoluwa [ NTS Radio ]
Those who don’t know Ifeoluwa’s #404 show on NTS Radio, educate – seamless selections of techno and bass sit alongside trap, grime, RnB, footwork and more, and make for compelling listening. For the open minded and the musically interested, she is one to watch.
