Lakuti and Tama Sumo close out Finest Friday for the year with Awesome Tapes From Africa's Brian Shimkovitz and Chicago's own Cordel Johnson—his Berlin debut.
Awesome Tapes From Africa

We will be closing out the year with our third & last edition of Finest Friday for 2018 for Panorama Bar with two more favourite guest djs joining us behind the decks for your pleasure. We are happy to be joined by Brian Shimkovitz aka Awesome Tapes From Africa and Cordell Johnson.
Brian is a leading exponent of african music who as a DJ brings a global perspective to the dancefloor. Drawing on his vast african cassette archive, which includes highlife, fuji, benga, tsonga disco, soukous, hiphop, rhumba and ethiosoul, among countless other genres. His dj sets on twin tape decks explore deep, regional sounds using analoganchored agility not heard or seen anywhere else. We were lucky enough to get further insights into him and the label. One of those being how incredibly difficult it was to first track down Ata Kak in order to properly license his music. He held on to the music as he wanted to make sure that he got the artist’s approval and importantly to also financially compensate the artist. Consequently the reissuing of Ata Kak’s music gained him new fans and totally kick started his career and got him touring festivals & music halls across Europe. The label has since unearthed and also helped expose the talents of ethiopian jazz veteran Hailu Mergia, to a whole new generation, now the artist who is a taxi driver is now also touring across the States and Europe with his music. We are huge fans of the ethical approach to working with non western artists as it is all about not only exposing the music but also about supporting the artists through their own careers and making sure that they also prosper.
Cordel Johnson may not be the name you see amongst the current names who are frequently on festival and club bookings within Europe but trust us when we say that his dj-ing will leave you shook & wanting more. Cordell Johnson is considered to be one of the smoothest, most knowledgeable djs in Chicago. He has been spinning records since 1981, growing up on a healthy diet of WBMX's radio show, and Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy at the Power Plant, the Music Box, COD’s and learning from the legends in creating his own style and take. Cordell currently is working hard providing a movement for dancers and music lovers by encouraging people to take an „excursion" off the beaten path of music and the usual scene in Chicago. Along with his long time friend James Vincent, they have created that diverse vibe and energy as people from nearly all walks of life come together for a monthly gathering of expression on the dance floor. Heavily infused with the rhythms of the afro-latin diaspora, this musical journey encompasses a variety of influences. Cordell will be dj-ing for the very first time in Berlin.
As per usual we will also be there to add in our musical contribution.
