We’re back in London after a summer break with three of the finest selectors the scene has to offer. Joining us in our new home of Grow Tottenham are Cera Khin of LazyTapes, up-and-comer Jabes, and the return of Laksa.
~ Laksa [ Ilian Tape, Mistry, Timedance ]
We’re welcoming back an old friend: Laksa will be headlining our first party at Grow Tottenham! Since throwing down a Bass and UK funky heavy set at Pickle Factory last year, one of our favourites so far, Laksa has grown from strength to strength. Following on from sought-after releases with Timedance and Mistry, Laksa has continued his collaborations with Zenker Brothers’ project Ilian Tape. His most recent production on the label, ‘Delicates’, showcases his talent for weighty and melodic earworms. ‘Madu’s Break’, with its rolling drum rhythms and subtle breakdowns, best displays Laksa’s talent for blending hard and soft, without compromising his signature intensity. Like many of his productions, ‘Delicates’ finds its power in the emphasis given to space. Laksa’s ever expanding discography and explosive DJ sets has established him as one of the most exciting talents the UK has to offer. Needless to say, you don’t want to miss this one!
~ Cera Khin [ Lazy Tapes ]
With one foot in Berlin and another in Bristol, Cera Khin’s rise is emblematic of the scene’s collaborative and cross-over instincts. Whilst Khin maintains regular slots on Noods radio and NTS, her primary project is her label, Lazy Tapes. The imprint’s debut release, ‘Guided Meditation’, is a genre bending experimental journey into the darker sides of ambient. Further releases followed, with respected ambient-jungle artist Christoph de Babalon compounding Lazy Tapes’ status as having some of the most forward-thinking approaches to electronic music. The label’s most recent release, and its first 12”, ‘The Screws That Hold The World Together’, comes from Peder Mannerfelt, who manages to distil the essence of Lazy Tapes into a trio of head-banging, club ready tracks. Lazy Tapes’ sonic universe draws from all elements of electronic and dance, refracting the familiar into spaced out, anaesthetised constructions for uses in the club and its resulting hangover.
Lazy Tapes’ intelligent application and deconstruction of a wide range of sounds is reflected in the range of Khin’s energetic and eclectic DJ sets. These frequently taking a winding approach to genre, a journey through dub, dancehall, jungle and techno. With the approach that she will play ‘whatever I want’, we cannot wait to see what Khin will bring to the table. Expect anything but standard 4/4 techno!
~ Jabes [ Treehouse ]
Jabes has been making a name for himself with his technical skill and his habit of getting dancefloors on his side. His b2bs with fellow Goodness recruit Happa showcase his breakneck style; dropping in on techno, jungle, UK funky and anything else they could get their hands on. With his hotly anticipated debut release on Treehouse on the way, we’re delighted that Jabes will be warming up the valves for us on the 5th!
