On Wednesday, November 28th from 9PM-4AM @ Cielo, Louie Vega and Kevin Hedge’s weekly Roots NYC club night celebrates the extraordinary life of Sa’D “The Hourchild” Ali with a benefit for his family.
With a fundamental role shaping Parliament-Funkadelic, Atomicheadz, FSQ, Soul Clap and on and on, Sa’D stood as a bridge between a wide range of music such as House, Hip-Hop, Funk, Disco and beyond. We called Sa’D Ali "The Hourchild" because of his amazing sense of timing; he was always there at the right moment and had an impeccable ability to connect the dots. We believe the line up for his tribute reflects this spirit of connection. Sa’D The Hourchild Ali's recording artist debut track "Asylum" for Anané Vega's NULU Electronic record label, released earlier this year opened with Sa'd exclaiming “I’m not famous. I’m infamous. You have to know your shit to know who I am”. Well, on this special night we intend on giving you a full dose of the music that he stood for.
For those of you who had been touched by Sa’D’s life, this has been a particularly difficult year. Sa'd unfortunately passed away at age 53 in early 2018 and is survived by his mother and father, three sisters, three young daughters and large musical community that he considered and treated like blood family. We gather at Cielo NYC on Wednesday November 28th to celebrate the extraordinary life of The Hourchild, born Dwayne Mautlsby, November 29th, 1964. Cover charge from the event and any additional donations will go towards the education expenses of Sa'd's daughters.
Sa’D used to say “You can’t dance to every record at the disco” but on November 28th, celebrating the life of our beloved, surrounded by friends and family, we’re pretty sure you’ll give your best shot!
