SEQUENCE reconnects with familiar and new members of the artist collective Discwoman.
When Discwoman last visited DC, several founding members took part in the inaugural Women’s March and, with the energy from that day, gave SEQUENCE a night to remember. In the two years to follow, Discwoman has become even more of a force in the entertainment world, nurturing talent from across the globe, giving new meaning to the term “dance floor safety,” and generally bringing an underrepresented but outlandishly talented swath of artists to the forefront of dance music.
In organizing Discwoman’s auspicious return, SEQUENCE landed founding member Umfang just before her sojourn to Australia. There she will headline several outdoor events before gearing up for a busy summer on the festival circuit. But to classify Umfang as yet another globetrotting DJ would betray her deep versatility as an artist. A cursory glance of her SoundCloud profile yields a plethora of techno soundscapes, from late-night mind-bending excursions to heavy-hitting vintage rave to be heard in legendary recorded sets at Dekmantel Festival, The Lot Radio, and other venues. Expect nothing short of an incredible range of exciting dance music that continues to define this Brooklyn-based vanguard of techno.
Fortunately, Umfang is not traveling alone. She is joined by rapidly up-and-coming Discwoman member, Akua. Trained on a diet of primordial techno, Akua creates sets often described as “controlled chaos.” We agree. In our review of her output so far we find wildly varying and exciting sets through the podcasts series Daisychain, Siren on NTS, and Rinse FM. Also and in short order, Akua’s been headlining some of the country’s best techno parties including UNTER, Technofeminism, and Hot Mass. We cannot wait to see Akua live and in the flesh for her DC debut!
Next up is our own bionic superhuman Juana whose DJ career catapulted from DC’s first Discwoman experience just two years ago. This night finds Juana returning from a two-week European tour of sorts playing the beloved Buttons party in Berlin, Boiler Room in Utrecht, and a Discwoman night in Liverpool. Often seen frolicing barefoot, she is highly likely to be pounding out fresh .aiffs, hopefully including a few of her own fabulous files coming out this spring.
For the unenviable job of closing the night, we tapped another emerging producer and SEQUENCE member, Furtive. Furtive brushes his teeth and flosses every night. It appears you are still reading so we will just say he is true to his namesake and shy in the booth, but his studio wizardry and production acumen is quietly gaining notoriety. As he guides our minds into the soft light of a new spring morn, we cannot wait to see what new, unreleased treats he flings with passionate abandon from the DJ booth, like a fluffy little techno Easter Bunny.
The event is private and is strictly open to advance ticket holders only. BYOB. No alcohol will be sold or made available.
Absolutely zero tolerance for sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, unsolicited touching, or any other oppressive behavior. Offenders will be dealt with immediately.
