For our first instalment, we're joined by Berghain resident and one of the most exciting artists on the Ostgut Ton roster - Somewhen.
Somewhen [Ostgut Ton I Berlin]
Somewhen belongs to the new techno generation of Berlin, in which original themes of the genre are continued, but whose meanings are adapted to the post-modern context. Futurism and nostalgia - two traditional techno-motives that consciously come together with the producer, DJ and label operator. Somewhen describes both this uncertain time of a 'somehow vague' (whenever) future, but also the confidence to own one's dreams 'sometime' (sometime) to reach.
In 2014, Somewhen made a name for himself with the track "Kobalt" on his debut EP - 9, which presented a conceptual and character-strong artist, driven by a sophisticated sound and language. It is not only the search for sometimes decorative and complex melodies that give Somewhen's sound a unique soul, but also the way he has gone about it so far.
Born in Berlin in the mid-eighties, Somewhen initially learnt to play the drums and piano, which he later tried on hip-hop instrumentals. Long before his first release, the Berliner explored the energy-charged potential between beat, groove and melody. Influenced by bands like Depeche Mode and Massive Attack, as well as Berlin’s ubiquitous club culture, his sound design shifted ever more clearly into electronic terrain. From hypnotic repetition, to the subtle richness of detail, Somewhen's sound design feeds from different sources today, however all with the same vision in common, with which he deliberately defies as one-dimensionality.
