"I have always preferred music that takes you on a journey… the kind where you can just dive deep into and let go everything else in mind" proclaimed by one of the current maestros of the Japanese deep techno scene: Wata Igarashi. While Wata might be a recent addition to the techno world his music career is already decades long. Membership in a punk hardcore band, F.O.D. (Fuckers of Defeat) led him to the experimental jazz scene, slowly evolving his ear and his musicianship. From this extraordinary beginning, Wata took quickly to techno in an ever evolving string of releases on the widely respected Midgar, Semantica, Bunker NYC, and DJ Nobu’s Bitta label. Wata Igarashi is now the toast of the techno world, distinguished by the psychedelic journey of blissful tension, sinking listeners through looming synths and engulfing them with kinetic basslines. As with numerous other SEQUENCE guests, Wata will take us into another dimension, past sunrise and undoubtedly leave us changed for the better.
Rhyw, best known as one half of the Berlin based duo Cassegrain also joins the bill as the second high ranker. Rhyw’s own style, a combination of forward-moving grooves that effectively pushes and pulls, densely textured sound design, driving rhythm, and blunt kicks, is quickly developing as his releases on the likes of Shifted’s Avian and Cassegrain’s own Arcing Seas imprint. After even a preview listen, one will discover why and begin salivating at the thought of the heady trip Rhyw will take the sweaty AM crowd along for.
Starting off the evening and no doubt setting the table for a cerebral night of music will be a special back to back set from SEQUENCE members Ron Jackson and Furtive. Each has guided the SEQUENCE faithful over many hours before, and each brings a different perspective on the opening set. Whereas Ron Jackson often brings flowing, experimental sounds to his opening sets, Furtive aims to get bodies moving with the groove laid by his many new and unreleased productions. We cannot wait to hear what these two and the rest of the lineup have in store and more importantly how the evening of explorative techno tests the body and mind. Among the only certainty is a sense of inspiration at program’s end followed by sunglasses before the journey home.
