Mixing up gqom, pop and dance music live on stage, South African duo FAKA is one to watch.Line-up /
Glimpse into what lies ahead and peek into yesteryear with SUB LIMINAL #2: A CTM 2020 Future Prequel. A slew of boundary-defying artists arrive at Traumabarundkino for a night of uncompromising, outrageous sounds.
Fela Gucci and Desire Marea, better known as FAKA, address the complexities of their experiences as black queer bodies navigating the cis-hetero-topia of post-colonial Africaare via work that fluidly skirts around the boundaries of live music, performance art, video, photography, and more. FAKA take on post-apartheid homophobia, transphobia, and masculinity, via “an intoxicating potion of gqom, pop, gospel and ancient rhythms, often danced out in a hyper-sexual blur of New York ballroom and ancestral African styles,” (The Quietus) as heard on EPs such as Bottoms Revenge and Amaqhawe.
KABLAM is the chaotic producer, pioneering DJ, and Janus affiliate known for a style of DJing that rejects convention at every turn. As likely to unleash unrelenting fragments of acid, trance, and gabber as she is to appeal to noughties pop pleasures, KABLAM skillfully weaves new narratives out of the sounds of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Her own productions have been described as “a brutalist concoction of the sledgehammer and the spiritual.” (The Guardian) From the lilting hardcore of 2016’s Furiosa to the spiralling chaos of Confusía, KABLAM’s output is reliably raw.
Discwoman affiliate DJ Haram is a producer and DJ who throws down for Jersey, Philly, and Baltimore with club and booty bounce sets, but has also been known to pay homage to her roots in the traditions of Middle Eastern music and DIY noise scenes. She curates (f)LAWLESS, a queer fundraising event; DIY hip hop night ‘Gas’; magazine Bros Fall Back; as well as the monthly RAGE RADIO show on Rinse FM. Earlier this year, she released Grace via Hyperdub, a release which was described as being “at times so focused and earth-shakingly forceful that it's a little intimidating.” (Resident Advisor) She is also half of noise rap duo 700 Bliss with Moor Mother.
Pininga is a São Paulo-based DJ and producer, who blends together the vast range of styles borne from Brazil. One third of Baile Furioso, and one quarter of Club Tormenta, Pininga is also affiliated with South American label NAAFI, the Stockholm-based Staycore, as well as queer MC Linn da Quebrada. Pininga’s DJ sets represent his global and networked approach, inspired equally by Brazilian musics such as frevo and samba as much as pop, breakcore, and techno derived from the US and Europe.
