Umfang (Discwoman, USA)

Ustanova is joining forces with Red Dawns, a queer and feminist festival, which thrives to open public spaces for socialisation and expression on a nonhierarchic, nonexploitive and anticapitalist basis. Together we present to you, for the first time ever in Ljubljana, Umfang!
Umfang, the co-founder of the infamous Discwoman collective from the US, born in the Bronx, has now been active in Brooklyn for over a decade.
She grew up in a politically-minded household, attending protests organised by the queer community and protesting against the Iraq war with both her parents. Building on this grounding in activism, she’s sought to change the imbalances she now recognises in music, joining with Beta Librae to throw the female-dominated parties at Bossa Nova. That developed into the acclaimed Technofeminism series that has shone a light on underrepresented talents.
It was at Bossa Nova that she first met ex-Londoner Frankie Hutchinson, who became one of the founding members of the Discwoman collective. Founded in 2014, Discwoman’s mission is to get female-identifying artists booked and paid for their work. Since its debut event, a two-day festival in New York, Discwoman has become a global force for progression in dance music, working with over 150 artists, inspiring the formation of similarly minded collectives and furthering the conversation around inclusivity and diversity in music.
Umfang easily deconstructs the average techno set, unravels it and integrates it into a new whole. Similarly, one could argue for her amorphous-polyrhythmic production, most of which she releases through Ninja Tune.
The chains of repression will break only by dance. And radical social and systemic change.
Ustanova (“The Institution”) is a social structure that makes the rules for behaviour of a larger group of people. With its jurisdictions on the dancefloor, it tries to intervene into public spaces and educate them into a community.
The rules of the dancefloor are not arbitrary but are determined and executed by a trustworthy community. Any kinds of verbal or physical violence, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, nationalism, racism or other types of oppression are strictly prohibited.
