Falko Brocksieper (Sub_Static, Contexterrior, Leena Music, Tuningspork, Treibstoff)
Falko Brocksieper first encountered electronic music in 1993 when attending numerous raves and clubs, and soon after he began acquiring his own skills as a DJ. The european rave-techno of the time was the initial counterpoint, after which he discovered artists from Detroit, Chicago and the Midwest, such as Robert Hood, Woody McBride, Daniel Bell and Jeff Mills.
In 1997 he moved from his hometown to Cologne, where he gained further influences from the city's vibrant minimal-techno and electronica scene.
As he had already acquired experience with sequencing programas achildon the Amiga 500, in 1999, during his studies at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and amidst various activities in media design, video art and installation, he decided to focus on electronic music production.
Falko Brocksieper's first vinyl record was released in 2001 on Sub Static label, which he founded in cooperation with Mia Grobelny at that time. Further releases quickly followed on labels such as Treibstoff, Tuning Spork, Resopal, Dumb Unit and Tongut. In 2003 he put out his first album 'Hoax Deluxe', refining his style between hypnotic minimalism and an edgy analog sound. With his unique sound, he became high in demand as a remixer and produced remixes for Akufen, Basteroid, Gabriel Ananda, Dirt Crew, Sid LeRock, Dapayk & Padberg, Benjamin Fehr and many more.
In 2003 he founded his second label, Karloff Rekordings, with the intention of providing a separate playground for more experimental musical approaches to techno and house. With over 100 releases altogether so far, Sub Static and Karloff have become renowned brands in electronic music today.
Falko Brocksieper moved to Berlin in 2004, in order to infuse fresh energy in his music production and record labels and he released his second album 'Heavy Day'in 2008.
With the release of 'Heavy Day', Brocksieper used the album tour as an opportunity to bring about his first ever live sets which he continues to perform together with over 10 years experience as an international DJ.
Mia Grobelny (Sub Static, Areal, Traum)
Mia, who left her old homebase Cologne in mid-2004 to resettle in Berlin, is neither to be confused with the most recent Grime hype from the UK, nor the popular German rock band. In the mid-90's Mia first took her place behind the turntables. She got into minimal techno and the likes in Cologne quite quickly, and developed a great reputation for her emotional, spunky DJ sets inside the local underground within just a few years.
Also Mia's passion for making her own productions grew at that time, leading to the foundation of her label Sub Static in the year 2000, which she runs together with Falko Brocksieper. Mia's early records on Sub Static are characterized by a deep darkness and a melodic subtlety that's still to be found in her more recent works. Soon other labels raised their attention for the mystic female techno producer, and more releases followed on Traum, Schallplatten and Trapez, showing Mia's efforts to achieve more compatibility for the dancefloor, without dropping her sensibility for drawing wide circles of tension and great atmosphere.
After several remixes for Contriva, The Modernist, Jake Fairley, Basteroid, Skua Lovelle and more, Mia's debut album 'Schwarzweiss' was released on Sub Static in 2004. Here she succeeded to enrich her style with subtle vocals and edgy acid influences. With this release, she received wide coverage within the music press. Further releases and remixes followed, as well as the overdue step to live performance.
In early 2007, Mia's second album 'Bittersuess' (bittersweet), turned out to be her greatest success. Here she succeeds more than ever to capture dancefloor techno and its congenerics in a sensitive, enchanted way, transporting a magic that is rarely found in most contemporary productions. The effort resulted in a flood of DJ and live gigs, where Mia always leaves a lasting impression.
Despite all these activities, she still didn't miss out on the label work in the last years.
Todd Sines (Planet E, Morris Audio, Frankie)
From the flat fields of Ohio to the concrete jungle of New York, Todd Sines' environments; real and virtual, have served as inspiration for his unique, hybrid sound. His post punk, industrial, and hip-hop upbringings, filtered through an obsession with analogue and early digital technology, resulted in stripped down electronic funk; before minimal was mnml - it was just effective. Through his techno band, Body Release, with key Ohio players Titonton Duvanté, Charles Noel [Archetyp] and Mike Szewczyk, they dabbled in early rave sounds before embarking on their own paths. Todd's introduction in early 1993 to Detroit's Carl Craig and Daniel Bell resulted in seminal releases with Peacefrog, Planet E and 7th City by year end. Catching the ear of Richie Hawtin, "boiling point" was featured on his debut mix CD in 1995 on Mixmag. Soon after, releases on Andy Vaz's Background Records and Titonton's own Residual brought his sound to house and techno aficionados worldwide. Since his move to New York in 2003, he's worked with a variety of other artists, including !!!, Death in Vegas, Liquid Liquid's Sal Principato and Apollo Heights; he's remixed Alexander Robotnick, Paul Randolph, Robert Owens, Moonstarr, Adam Marshall, Lanoiraude and more. With his new material with Natacha Labelle on Frankie, he pushes the boundaries of house music, and with the resurrection of his .xtrak alias on YORE, his return to jackin' minimal funk reminds people of where it all started.
