Kenny Dope (Hip Hop Set)
Masters At Work are one of the most respected and prolific of all of the producers to come out of NYC in the 90's. Little Louie Vega and Kenny Dope Gonzalez (aka Masters At Work) are probably best known for their Nu Yorican Soul project that featured collaborations with the likes of Roy Ayres and George Benson.
The duo have more classic records to their name than most.
Kenny Dope Gonzalez grew up listening to the soul, funk, boogie and disco records around at the time, and started his DJ career back in 1985 with a series of block parties in his native Brooklyn.
Living in New York it was almost impossible for him to not love hip hop and in the 90's he produced a series of limited releases featuring what have become forgotten classics of the era. 'The Pushin Dope' EP released in 1994 is still one of our all time favourite twelve inches and these days goes for silly money on Ebay, etc.
So we are very pleased that he has agreed to come and play a rare hip hop set at Plan B. In the last few months he has returned to his hip hop roots and was keen to come to London and do something different from the endless house nights he plays at.
As well as golden age hip hop and some serious turntable skills, you are guaranteed to hear some classic funk breaks and maybe even a few of those incredible Masters At Work remixes.
Support comes from the Eglo Records crew, with one of our favourite producers of the moment - Funkineven, heading south with bossman Alexander Nut.
This is a very very rare opportunity to see Kenny Dope playing the records that influenced him and that still play a big part in his life.
It has been more than ten years since has played a set like this in London and it may be another ten before he agrees to do it again.
