Rick Wade - Detroit, USA
Harmonie Park/Rush Hour/Laid
One of Detroit's best kept secrets, Rick Wade has been producing late night tracks and tapping into the essence of deepness since the '90's. Known for their universal appeal and appearing on over 20 different labels worldwide, soulful, timeless grooves are his signature. Growing up in Buchanan MI, 1 hour outside of Chicago he was influenced by Chicago radio station WBMX and the Salsoul material and local stations that played the likes of Al Green and Isaac Hayes. Rick remembers:
"I've always been into the music first. I loved the way they (WBMX) would blend two songs together and make it sound like one. I didn't even know what a DJ was back then. I just wanted to blend songs together...When I went to the record store those songs were only available on 12" vinyl, then I needed turntables to play them and then I needed a mixer if I wanted to blend them... At parties I had the records and I had the turntables so I became the DJ almost by default."
While attending the University of Michigan, Wade had the first house mix show on the college station WCBN called 'Journey to the Land of House'. Other presenters were impressed with his material and mixing skills and soon asked him to prepare mixes for their own shows. Some time around 1991 Rick was working on a mix for Brendan Gillen's 'Crush Collision' show and ran out of tracks that he wanted to include. Having always a love for and producing hip-hop Wade turned to his studio to create a track that would fit the mix perfectly and hasn't looked back since. In 1993 Rick and Dan Bell started Harmonie Park to release house material and in 1995 Rick started another label Bass Force primarily as an outlet for the Booty / Bass material that he records under the 'Big Daddy Rick' moniker.
Today, Rick Wade enjoys a reputation as one of the premier House mixshow producers in the world and anyone who likes deep, funky vibes should definitely find a chance to see him play live. Every Rick Wade set is fresh and spontaneous. Drawing its energy directly from the unique vibe of each party, Rick exposes the deepness to the crowd, taking the vibe to an emotional peak where it merges with the body, mind, and spirit into a continuous musical orgasm that lasts long after his set is over.
Ricks latest release is on the Laid Compilation released in June 2011. With releases on Rush Hour and Laid, not to mention his own label, Harmonie Park, it's hard not to get excited about someone so classic and yet totally relevant and pushing the boundaries to make future classics. right on...
Bang the Box/Lazy Days - San Francisco via Texas, Earth
"...from Texas to the Bay...all day."
Not willing to claim any one genre as his “style”, Lance De Sardi's musical output always teeters somewhere between house and techno, and is always highly electronic. At 30-ish years old, living in San Francisco, his music embraces all of his influences to the fullest, creating a unique juxtaposition of styles, deep to jacking and back again. These days, with the party in full swing in SF, Lance has his grubby fingers in almost every aspect of music. He’s just started a label and coinciding club night called Bang the Box,and has a slew of new releases set to go. In his hometown of Dallas, Texas he got into music at an early age; and not the sounds of the honky tonk you might expect.
At twelve a friend introduced him to industrial and dance music, listening to bands like Nine Inch Nails, Nitzer Ebb, LFO, and 808 State. As he dug deeper, the raw energy in music from Detroit and Chicago started to pique his interest. He couldn’t get enough. Next thing he knew, he was at the local record store every Wednesday, waiting for the twelve inches to come in. Once he grasped the DJ thing, he started to mess around with samplers and keyboards, trying to emulate the records he liked. Knowing that production was a means to help get DJ gigs, the combination became an obsession. Hearing his records played to a crowd brought him a whole different feeling than mixing other peoples music, and he couldn’t live without either of them. Not long after getting his first few songs on wax, he uprooted and moved to California. Having had enough of the dry plains of Texas, he wanted to put the “small fish in a big pond” theory to the test. It proved to work in his favor, and he quickly became a mainstay in the house music community, releasing records on labels like Classic, Naked Music, Coco Machete, Seasons, and PIAS, to name a few. With his 2003 underground hit “Tie Me Up”, under the moniker Land Shark, or his huge remix of Zap Mama’s “Rafiki”, he solidified his place in dance music lore. Now you know some pertinent musical information on Lance’s life. But if you’re ever in San Francisco and want to see what he’s really like, look him up, maybe ya’ll can get in to some trouble... Check Lance's newest releases on Bang the Box and Lazy Days for more untz-untz-untz.
Larry Gonnello Jr
The Boombox Affair - San Francisco, Earth
Born and raised in Kansas City, Larry got his first lesson on a pair of turntables from a young guy from Detroit named Theo Parrish, who was attending the Art Institute and was throwing events with mutual friends. Immediately hooked and blown away by this strange sound, he started to buy music and throw parties(both whenever affordable), honing his love and skill over the years. A 100% vinyl dj, Larry has amassed quite a record collection, but still only plays the newest tracks. His theory is that everything bad is ALWAYS released digitally, but only music that is loved makes it to the record press.
In 2004, he relocated to San Francisco, then in 2007 moved to Switzerland for a while, and after a brief stint on the east coast is back and is 'never moving away' from Fog City. With his mid-western roots and a definite worldly influence he is never locked into any style but his own, Larry prides himself on playing good tracks to make you dance, no matter the 'category' and remind you why this music, our music, begins and ends with spinning records.
HIs most recent project is sound system called The Boombox Affair. It's a collection of massive 80's boomboxes, turntables, and a bass for oomph all running on rechargeable batteries used for park parties and also promoting late night events under the same moniker with the goal of bringing in fresh, underground talent into an eager city...and maybe blending a few records along the way. Cheers to that!
Melody DJ's/The Boombox Affair
Still a kid(he's 24!), Robin had strange beginnings as a tender 12 year old house music DJ in santa cruz, performing at Colors, Flow, Blue Lagoon, Streetlight in-store events, and on the radio at KZSC and KZSU (big love). Entering the San Francisco scene under the careful guidance of mentors Vasili Gavre, Rick Preston and Rob Monroy, Hammurabi had a ball before taking 6 years to complete a degree at UC Berkeley and enter the job market. Capable of lush deep house, driving tech, and a smattering of funk and disco, Robin is back on the scene in San Francisco, with new perspective and experience to guide his dancefloors. He is a gifted dj and makes it look easy. He will make you move.
Robin Simmons has amassed more than 10 years experience spinning house music on vinyl and CD in Santa Cruz, where he began, and San Francisco, where he works actively as a DJ. Robin is currently working with Larry Gonnello on the Boombox Affair, and with Rick Preston and Andrew Phelan on a series of bus and loft parties called Melody.
