Beats In Abundance
Novice of Genius
A long time ago in a galaxy (not that) far, far away...a young boy, known as Duncan Beiny, from Warwick university changed the face of DJing as we know it, making hip hop fun and demonstrating DJ skills that no-one had dared dabble with before. Thus DJ Yoda was born.
He can cut and paste faster than you can say obiwankenobi and was instrumental in creating a 'cut-up' mixing style. Not content with your average beats and rhythms, Yoda likes to take things to the next level, interspersing movie, TV and YouTube samples into his songs. Few genres have been untouched by Yoda, and his sets can feature anything from funk to reggae to drum 'n' bass to swing and even western music. He also collaborated with The Heritage Orchestra, a 40-piece collective, and performed the first ever classical concerto written for turntables.
His latest tour The Wonderful World of DJ Yoda, is an audiovisual extravaganza at which he DJs both video and audio. The clips vary from old commercials to cartoons to Yoda's favourite movies and YouTube clips, which are then mixed in time with the music.
A veteran on the festival circuit, Yoda has played all over the world from China to Brazil to Australia, and performed alongside Amy Winehouse, Fatboy Slim, Mark Ronson and with Lily Allen. He also famously played on the same bill as Steve Martin, Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock at the HBO Comedy Festival in Las Vegas.
We're lucky enough to have the original musical Jedi for one night and we are beyond excited, especially considering our special November guest has been voted one of ten DJs to see before you die by Q Magazine, and even more notably Hip Hop Connection voted him as one of the top three DJs in the world. What better a place to see this legendary mix-master than Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes? An intimate venue peppered with as many influences as Yoda himself.
Also on the bill is the founder of the amazing Mixcloud, the internet service that we all know and love that has pioneered sharing music. DJ Sketchy will be showing us his mixing skills and no doubt wowing us with some tracks he has found via the Mixcloud vaults.
Keeping the crowd moving throughout the night we also have all our favourite party regulars Beats in Abundance, The Monitors, and Novice of Genius.
So make sure you get down to Russell Square on the 26th November. No if's, but's or maybe's. In the words of Yoda himself (the little green original): "No! Try not. Do...There is no try".
Advance tickets can be bought for £5 from www.wegottickets.com, or alternatively they are available on the door for £8 or more. This will sell out, so get your tickets early.
