A relentless and unstoppable Nick Curly heads into 2012 on the back of yet another excellent year. Nick once again reached the highest echelons of Resident Advisorâ€™s annual DJ poll, released Cocoonâ€™s biggest selling 12â€ of 2011 and his residency at Space Ibizaâ€™s Kehakuma continued to break new ground. Unquestionably proud of his home-town, this Mannheim nativeâ€™s talent and determination has long outlasted the hype that broke out in the late 00â€™s over the house sound which emerged there.
January 1 sees him launch his â€˜Between The Linesâ€™ tour at the Cecille showcase at Mexicoâ€™s BPM Festival, alongside DJ Sneak. Perhaps it is fitting that his debut tour show brings together Nick, his own label which helped propel him to his current standing and one of his own personal heroes in the form of Sneak.
â€˜Between The Linesâ€™ refers to the debut artist album from Nick Curly. Recorded in the latter half of 2011, it is scheduled for release in March 2012 on Cecille Records. Given his undoubted success in releasing dance-floor cuts, the somewhat slower feel of the album may come as a surprise to some, although the artist himself has always been ready to show a different face to his musical expression. â€œMy main aim with this project was to capture an emotional feelingâ€ explains Nick. â€œI brought in live instrumentation to give more sonic depth and I think the vocals of Rebecca Maas, Luca Sportiello and, in particular, Worthy Davis give the tracks exactly what I was looking for â€“ â€˜Piano in the Darkâ€™ and â€˜Undergroundâ€™ being the examples I would highlight.â€
And what of the albumâ€™s title? â€œWell, of course, I am German, but not 100% German orientated with my work. In fact, there have been many occasions when I am playing at home and people are surprised that I am German when they meet me - I have no idea why that is! I spend much time touring and playing in the UK, the USA and around the world. Sometimes I feel that I donâ€™t really belong in one particular place, the same with my music.â€
Lovers of his club music, should not fear. Nick has things on the way to keep you warm. His huge remix of Zoo Brazilâ€™s â€˜Slobâ€™ has just been released on Sci+Tec and already climbing charts. â€˜Still Not Sorryâ€™ follows shortly afterwards on 8 Bit and the final EP before the album â€˜A Certain Someoneâ€™ arrives in January.
Demand for Nickâ€™s DJ sets remain as high as ever â€“ with tour dates confirmed in Mexico City, Stockholm, Berlin, Cologne, Bogota, Lima, Hamburg, Beijing, Tokyo, Newcastle, Milan, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Wurzberg, Rome, Lyon, Zurich, Mallorca, New York, Toronto, Geneva and more besides.

Lee Van Dowski : The very name exudes style and intrigueâ€”a countrylord, perhaps, who at night throws open the manor gates to host all-night bacchanals legendary for their wine and song.
And though the French-born, Geneva-based artist may not have a manor to his name, the rest isn't far off the mark. Born Renaud Lewandowski, Lee has earned a reputation as a kind of dark prince of uplifting
electronic musicâ€”a trickster who spreads his mischief via long, undulating DJ sets and bewilderingly funky releases. And he's done this in a remarkably short span of time. In 2004, he and Philippe Quenum released the well-received "Extension"/"Oregon" single for Luciano's Cadenza label; since then Lee has gone on to unleash a deluge of material on labels like Mental Groove, Bpitch Control, Memo,
Plak, Defrag Sound Processing, Mobilee, Leena, Wagon Repair, Soma (where Lee and Quenum also released their collaborative album, As Told On The Evening Ofâ€¦) and still more. He's a regular fixture at some of the world's most celebrated nightclubsâ€”Weetamix, Panorama Bar, Goa, Rex Club, D edge etcâ€¦and even more celebrated afters. And as the director of two labelsâ€”Num, alongside Quenum, and 60Sec, with Agnesâ€”he's released dozens of records from the likes of Ripperton, Mike Shannon, Dachshund, Alex Attias and many more.
But while it's been a comparatively rapid ascent, Lee's roots go deep. His musical prehistory may be similar to many of his generation: raised on rock and hip-hop, complete with the obligatory attempt to
learn to play guitar followed by short-lived bands with schoolmates. But Lee was the beneficiary of his stepfather's eclectic musical tastes, which spanned classical, jazz, funk, rock and even musique
concrete and academic electronic music. "I was fascinated by the metallic sleeves and their geometrical designs," he remembers, suggesting a possible source for the shimmering timbres and clever
vectors of his own music.
The pieces first fell together in 1993, when a friend invited Lee to attend a rave in southern France, near where he lived. "That was the shock of my life," says Lee, echoing a sentiment that will be familiar
to many. "That was what I was looking for, without really knowing itâ€” thousands of people dancing and sweating in the open air. An amazing soundsystem. And this never-ending kick that drives you to madnessâ€¦ Since that day, I've devoted my life entirely to being a part of this."
Lee got involved with the infamous Dragon Bal raves, where Miss Kittin got her start; he worked mundane jobs, saved money, bought decks and a mixer and taught himself to spin. He came to production the same way, beginning with an MPC2000, but translating the sounds in his head into its fat, blocky pads wasn't as easy as it seemed. His ambitions took Lee to Geneva, where he earned a degree in music engineering, but it may have been his next job, working in a Lausanne music shop, that really signaled his entry into the world of electronic music. "Even if the boss was a crazy guy, the shop was like a goldmine, full of gear and old analog synths, drum machines, all the recording and mixing tools you could dream of," he recalls with awe. He took advantage of his employee discount to build out his studio, and just as importantly, the shop served as a focal point for all the area's musicians. It was here that Lee would meet both Quenum and Lucianoâ€”and from there, as they say, the rest is historyâ€¦
There's no single description for Lee's productions, which have proved unusually malleable in his half-decade of releases; an early interest in the skittish rhythms of labels like Warp and Skam remains evident, but reformatted for the supple grooves of deep house and classic minimal techno. His time in the Lausanne music shop clearly served him well; Lee's tracks immediately stand out for their fine sense of detail, an almost intangible shimmer. Utilizing samples, drum machines and all manner of synthesizer, Lee's music remains open to every possibility. "It's an empirical process," he says of his method. "Each
sound or loop brings me to the next one, and so on, until the moment that I feel I have all the elements I need to finish the track. Of course, there are always surprises and accidentsâ€”that's what makes the magic in writing music."
Lee's DJ sets are similarly spirited. "Technically, I like to surprise myself," he says. "I like to do a long, smooth mix, and then a radical oneâ€¦ It's important for me to try telling a story, so of course your technique is another way of doing that, along with the music itself. With time and with age, maybe, the tempo really decreasedâ€”I think I play a bit deeper now than five or six years ago. But I still love a
good, bouncy track if it's not too aggressive, and if the energy serves the groove instead of breaking it." Slowing down also means stretching out. "I like to play long sets," he continues, "when you don't have to rush, and you can really forget yourself and build something different."
2009 finds Lee stretching out as never before. The year began with his Free For All Crash Endeavors, released on his and Quenum's Num label, and The Variable Man (Leena), with one track featuring Lee's longtime colleague Agnes; Lee also collaborated with Anja Schneider for Mobilee's 50th release, "Deseo"/"La Rouletteâ€ which was shortly followed by "Survival Edit" One Sided On Saf Series. Further releases include the toast of techno, up-tempo â€œGlass Epâ€ dropped on Material Series. â€œLet's Go Bowlingâ€ is a summer jackpot, packed with the kind of dancefloor stamina to make you weak at the knees. But the year's biggest development may be Lee's return to Cadenza, the label that helped launch his career five years ago. Just like the best kind of DJ set, Cadenza knows when to switch it up and with its 36th release this year, what better way to celebrate than with a new collaboration for Lee and newcomer, Glimpse on a split EP. The only unsurprising thing about the â€œLa Cocina Del Cabron" is how hard the track hits. Lee is now part of Cadenza Booking, a family-style roster that includes Luciano, Thomas Melchior, Petre Inspirescu, Rhadoo, Mirko Loko and many more of electronic dance music's most innovative players.
This summer will also host Lucianoâ€™s new groundbreaking project â€œÃ†ther.â€ The term â€œÃ†therâ€ means the personification of the â€˜upper skyâ€™, space or heaven and is a phrase used in both science and engineering but also in music. Essentially, Luciano will conduct 5 musicians from the CADENZA label, including Reboot, Digitaline, Mirko Loko and Lee himself in a live one hour set. The dynamics of a conductor orchestrating with the use of colour, will like never before, make you see sound and taste the bass, it's mind-bending stuff. From Tokyo to Liverpool, this event will pull out all the stops and is not to be missed. The Count Lee has returned to his Swiss manor, the gates are wide open, and the beat is beckoning.

Electronic music lover for nearly 20 years, Jeem Collins has known all its evolutions. The one that comes from the early 90s, deep house, tech house and deep techno, never aggressive, but always driven by a catchy and sexy groove. After having practiced for several years, he decided to embark on organizing his own parties in order to show the widest public the underground artists of his network who, he said, deserve better exposure. To get the best AOC, as he decides it would take root in the ultimate reference place : Ibiza. By careful selection of DJs that have proven themselves on the biggest dance floors and festivals on the planet, with the desire, the same as he expresses himself in his mixes : always be able of seducing their audience by the quality of their mixes and the smoothness of their musical palette combining pieces freshest new and even cult classics distilled at the perfect moment. The voluntary choice of places on a human scale. An invitation to share a special moment with an experienced public who is not reflected in the trend of current sales and marketing sound of radio and big generalists clubs today. Coming from Paris, it's during hip-hop battles that Stephane Lando acquired this incredible technical control of the mix and scratch which characterizes his style today and leaded him to the decks.
After an American Tour and a many European gigs from Marbella Spain to Morea Beach in Saint Tropez, he decided to move on from resident Dj to Art director of a famous Club in Chamonix Mont Blanc. During 4 years, he scheduled the best Djs in the world proposing an audacious line up.
However, he never stopped searching for new inspiration and kept playing around the world: The Madam , Bobino , The Man Ray , Maxims and The Red light in Paris, The Sound Factory , The First and Les Nuits Sonores 2009 in Lyon, il Nausicaa in Milano, Hollywood, Il Colle and Il Dadaumpa in Parma, The Concorde 2 in Brighton, The Fabrik and The Vertigo in London, Pacha and Elephant in Ibiza, MOAClub and ByPass in Geneva, D Club and Kult in Lausanne, The Plaza and Globul in Fribourg, The Liquid and the Novalis in Bern, Soho Room, Famous Club in Moscow and many more.
In 2009, he started a new adventure as resident DJ of the "Pop Plage Club" in Annecy and the worldwide famous "Caves de Courchevel". Now resident DJ at BORA BORA in Ibiza for FEECTION PARTIES in summer, he will be soon record in London his first fresh, funky and minimal track. Rich in all these experiences, his sets which swing between minimal and groovy house, are technical and feed by a never ending musical research. That's why its dancefloors are still on fire. Remy D style is the house music, deep house that sticks to the rhythm of the heart and accelerates it with a lot of bass and groove to finish close to the syncopated rhythm of percussion and its fast combos.
It is also the creator of Talking Heads, specializes in promoting house music events for which he has scheduled artists such as Oxia, Maceo Plex, Noze, Nina Kraviz, Carlo Lio to name a few. Resident in the Insomnia Music DV1 Lyon, and in ?MaH in Montpellier.
