BOK BOK (Night Slugs / Sound Pellegrino)
Since Bok Bok & L-Vis 1990 formed Night Slugs in late 2009, the label has consistently blurred the boundaries between house, UK funky, grime and dubstep with releases from the likes of Mosca, Lil Silva and Pearson Sound as well as from our two other guests. Until last year, Bok Bok himself kept a relatively low profile in terms of production. However, the Southside EP, which included ‘Silo Pass’ and ‘Hyperpass’, and his recent collaboration with Tom Trago pulled no punches. The combination of an old-school grime aesthetic with a futuristic palette of sounds is what makes Bok Bok’s productions stand out. Unsurprisingly, his DJ sets never fall short either – expect impeccable mixing and dubplates galore from the Night Slugs bossman.
JAM CITY (Night Slugs)
Jam City has become an increasingly important part of the Night Slugs roster since his debut Magic Drops EP in 2010. The title track was one that really fuelled the discussion of where the sound of the UK underground was heading, exploring an interesting middle ground and sneaking into the record bags of both dubstep and house DJs alike. Its follow up, The Waterworx EP saw the release of the irresistibly simple ‘Barely A Trak’ and he also came up with the goods for the most recent Night Slugs white label release. With his album ‘Classical Curves’ due for release this year, don’t miss this opportunity to dance to some fresh material!
GIRL UNIT (Night Slugs)
And last, but by no means least, to complete the Night Slugs showcase, we bring you the creator of arguably the label’s biggest ‘hit’. Girl Unit’s ‘Wut’ continues to create euphoric scenes on dancefloors with its instantly recognisable chord progression and punishing sub low. By his own admission, recreating timeless grooves is his aim we don’t think he has failed yet. It’s hard to imagine that these kinds of sounds would fit in anywhere else apart from on the Night Slugs imprint, a sign of how unique and forward-thinking the label is.
