Distance hails from the South London dubstep nucleus and is an originator of the dubstep sound. He has been involved in its development since its early years and has produced tracks with the likes of Skream, Benga, Pinch and Cyrus.
With a background of heavy metal and experimental industrial music, his approach to dubstep is truly different to any others. Whilst many producers reference influences such as King Tubby to Lee Scratch Perry, Distance main influence hails from the likes of Sepultura, Pantera and Fear Factory.
Distance as producer, DJ and label owner (Chestplate Records), has been pushing things in a direction all of his own. Gathering early support from the legendary John Peel and going on to be part of the utterly seminal Dubstep Warz show on Radio 1 presented by Mary Anne Hobbs, Distance has forged a name for himself as a critical figure in the scene.
Distance is a regular at the seminal raves such as FWD, DMZ, Exodus, SUB: DUB and more. His Dj bookings have taken him across the globe where he devastates dance floors and sound systems in his own unimitable style.
Distance's recorded output is also formidable, finding homes on labels as underground and seminal as Hotflush, Tectonic and Boka in his early career, to ending up on the world reputed Planet Mu, on which Distance released his debut album in 2007.
Distance's studio has spawned multiple stone cold killers over a range of styles but all uniquely Distance, highlighting why his new releases are some of the most highly anticipated in the scene.
If you’re a fan of heavy metal, industrial rock, dub, reggae and techno….then this is the sound for you. Though hard to relate these binary opposite genres together, somehow...Distance does just that.
Combining years of experience with a fresh enthusiasm in a way that very few artists can, SPL aka Sam Pool turns audio expectations on their heads with his dynamic take on electronic music, producing a party sound informed by rock and combining elements of dubstep, neurocrunk, psychedelic, progressive, hip hop, house, techno and drum and bass.
Fusing the shamelessness of old school rave music with an innovative approach to modern bass beats, SPL is devoted equally to immaculate sound quality and to the dance floor. A longtime lover of electronic music who began DJing at age 15 and making beats before that, SPL’s knack for entertaining and prowess in the studio has carried him on multiple world tours as a successful DJ.
With skills sharpened by years of international performances and an energetic style rich in global influence, SPL’s sound enters new territory time and time again. Now based in Portland, this passionate artist has turned his attention stateside to the growing electronic music community at home.
Look for SPL’s freebies online and watch for his upcoming releases on his own label, Hollow Point Recordings as well as 12th Planet’s SMOG Recordings. Never one to fear change and always one to dream big, SPL embraces the ongoing evolution of the electronic arts, and fans can only wonder what might be next for this exciting producer.
Matthew Gonsalves better known as Matty G, is without doubt the pioneer of the hip hop influenced sub-genre that ever so present in today's flourishing dubstep scene. Since his first release in 2006 on US based imprint 'Argon', he has gone from strength to strength building on his sample based 90's hip hop sound and having scene defying tracks along the way all from his studio in Santa Cruz, USA. In 2007 came the massive '50,000 Watts' which set the bar for the sub-low 808 sound that many have tried to imitate since and remains a true anthem within the scene to this day. It gained support from the who's who of dubstep royalty including Caspa & Rusko (featuring on their legendary FabricLive compilation), Skream, Digital Mystikz, N-Type & Joe Nice to name a few and also received the remix treatment from dubstep pioneer Loefah, all going towards firmly cementing the track, and Matty G in the history of the sound. Later that year Matty came with another anthem in the shape of 'West Coast Rocks' which again raised the bar and received a remix from Dub Police head honcho Caspa, who also that year put out Matty's debut release for the Dub Police label on the 2nd installment of the License To Thrill series sharing wax with Rusko and Dubwoofa.
In 2008 Matty released his debut album on Argon entitled 'Take You Back', which received rave reviews from all corners of the dubstep scene as well as bridging the gap even more so between dubstep and hip hop. Featuring vocals performances from the likes of Juakali and Audio Angel, the LP again solidified Matty's place among the dubstep ranks. As well as proving to be a renowned producer, Matty showed the masses he is as talented behind the decks, touring far and wide playing at such prestigious nights as; DMZ at The Mass in Brixton, Dub Police at Fabric in London and the world famous Glastonbury Festival (the largest music and performing arts festival in the world). Fast forward to 2010 and having just completed a tour of US for Scion AV along with Caspa, The Others, D1 and Rod Azlan, Matty is back in the studio on the best form of his life with numerous tracks doing the rounds and massive releases lined up including a single for Dub Police as well as remixes for Caspa and label mate Subscape. You are very likely to be seeing more of this man in the future, 2012 is shaping up to be the year when this musical stalwart really shines through.
