Andy Butler (Hercules & Love Affair/ DFA, NYC)
residents: Will Munro, Jaime Sin
This new avant disco outfit known as Hercules & Love Affair is the brainchild of NY resident and DJ Andrew Butler. It is one of the most inventive and original studio collaboration projects in some time, and the latest addition to the ever-growing and eclectic DFA family. Butler employs the talent of several notable guest contributors, such as vocalists (and sometimes DJ partner) Kim Ann Foxman as well as Antony (of Antony & The Johnsons), making Hercules & Love and Affair, and co-Producer Tim Goldsworthy of the DFA.
After many years of waiting on the sidelines and taking in the energy and shifting tides of the NY dance and club world, Hercules & Love Affair's debut release, "Classique #2," is a kinetic explosion of soulful, anthemic electro disco. Butler draws inspiration from the music he heard growing up going to parties with Chicago House DJ's like Derrick Carter and British expats the Wicked Crew both of whom played Disco and Protohouse jams in their always inspired DJ sets.
Together the two tracks bring forth what could be a new era of euphoric disco, at once truly original yet with subtle nods to its glittering past - where beautiful, bruising harmonies and loose-limbed mechanic rhythms collided to create a utopian and hedonistic dance floor paradise.
