How far back does one go to be able to say “psychedelia started here?”. as uk style guru peter york so succinctly pointed out in the outstanding don letts film series on uk subculture, “hippie and rave were essentially the same thing, they relied on sound, light and pharmacy, it was a created environment”. hes right of course, but lets take that a bit further, lets go to African plains thousands of years ago, where, in the area now called South Africa, it is seriously being considered that humanity, or human kind as we know it first appeared. There are enough contemporary field recordings of ritual music, both to dance to and to listen to, that in conjunction with one trance state or another were and are all about achieving a different state of consciousness, gaining union with a greater knowledge base, call it what you will, the cosmos, the is, the great within, the universe, illumination, or any one of the likely millions of god forms that have evolved out or humanity’s search for greater understanding and higher ground. It began in Africa, a long long time ago ! On the other side of the globe, deep in the south american rainforests, the indigenous tribes social order and way of life were and still are built upon a knowledge of psychedelic experience, likewise most tribal cultures that have existed since year dot, be they nomadic, or urban lifestyle based.
Our night at Eschschloraque celebrates this heritage, and in so doing offers a sound and vision experience that is not dance floor driven, and goes a little beyond the feel good manifesto of the chill out. you can dance if you want to of course. Dr Walker and ED2000 will endeavor to present for your and their own appreciation, rejuvenation and maybe even some kind of illumination, selections from their collective and very extensive music archives that were and are clearly intended as a soundtrack to a journey towards a different state of being, mavbe an as yet unknown state of mind where new ideas can flourish, and a new awareness can evolve. We will explore the last 50 years of psychedlia, occasionally referencing the same from our collective far distant pasts.
As Timothy Leary once said:
“Your only as young as the last time you changed your mind.”
sit still, breathe deeply, stop thinking … we will do the rest !
just maybe your new world starts right here! Right out of order!
