Sun Araw, Deep Magic, Falko Teichmann
On Friday May 3rd CTM is pleased to present an evening highlighting US musician Sun Araw and bandmate Deep Magic, and with DJ support from longstanding Berlin music activist Falko Teichmann. The night before the three willbe at Monarch next door for a B2B DJ session.
Over multiple cassette releases, three EPs, six full-length albums and some arresting visual work, Cameron Stallones aka Sun Araw has evolved as a singular purveyor of low-end psychedelia, melted afrobeat and warped dub.
An excellent example of hypnagogic pop, Sun Araw’s music messes with time; his tracks never quite go anywhere while never quite staying still either. These tracks, filled with swelling bass lines, bubbling percussion, flabby synth stabs and languid guitars, have a further tendency to merge into each other, conjuring a timeless fog.
The last year (2012) was a particularly busy one for Sun Araw. On top of joining forces with roots-reggae vocal group the Congos (responsible for one of the most venerated albums in reggae history, 1977’s Heart of the Congos) and experimental musician M. Geddes Gengras to release Icon Give Thank, an album that reached number seven on the Billboard Top World Albums chart, Sun Araw also released a seventh full-length, The Inner Treaty. This latest full-length found the artist in calmer waters again, plugging away at a series of fuzzy dub grooves.
Joining-in Sun Araw’s live show is Alex Gray, who will also perform solo as Deep Magic. Since releasing his debut album Solar Meditations for cult label Not Not Fun, Gray has since gone on to record a number of longform pieces, mainly on small cassette releases including for his own Deep Tapes label, in his exploration of mindstate and sound. The panoramic, lyrical atmospheres of his second full-length Lucid Thought (Preservation, 2012) feature evocative and sunbleached instrumentation of fingerpicked guitar, synth, percussion, various keyboards and vocal tones. Its euphoric state glows with microtonal melodies, continually shifting states, and shimmering waves of psychedelia. Alex Gray has also contributed to works by Pocahaunted and Black Eagle Child.
