7:00 pm PRE-LISTENING SESSION: JAMIE LIDELL (Warp)
Last year we released 'Multiply' upon you for the first time in Belgium. Well, let us also be the first to let you hear 'Multiply' in completely remixed form. Any objections?
8:00 pm MAXENCE CYRIN (FR)
MAXENCE CYRIN is a classically trained French pianist currently residing in Paris. His latest album 'Modern Rhapsodies' is homage to electronic music. Maxence, accompanied only by his piano, has restyled 'Windowlicker' from Aphex Twin, 'Behind The Wheel' from Depeche Mode, 'Unfinished Sympathy' from Massive Attack, 'Smokebelch II' from Sabres Of Paradise and even 'Acid Eiffel' from Choice - one of Laurent's Garnier alter-egos. Indeed the latter runs the F Com label and with this album he has his first 100% acoustic release. What's so remarkable is the melodic richness of these classic dance tracks. The result is all the more impressive if you know that no musical scores exist for these tracks. Maxence had to note everything based on 'ear and feeling'. His versions are purified, but rhythmic. Perfect music quiz material in any case.
8:30 pm TAPE TUM (B)
Harvested from the ABCocoon'05: TAPE TUM or the brothers Lieven and Benjamin Dousselaere. Also to be heard with DIJF SANDERS and THE VIOLENT HUSBANDS. Their soundscapes sound quite abstract and could also be used in theatre productions. Their music itself sounds more gripping though, but is equally surprising and pleasant at the same time. (K-RAA-K)³ and other attractive electronica releases stand out as references.
9:00 pm COLDCUT + SPECIAL GUESTS MIKE LADD & ROBERT OWENS (UK)
'So good we're not sure clubland will be able to handle it.' (Mixmag)
Coldcut is back. In a huge way! It's amazing how a pioneering act can keep on reinventing itself after almost 2O years. Their brand spanking new album 'Sound Mirrors' was released at the end of January and it's just about the best thing that Coldcut has ever produced. With the right vision, beats and appropriate guest appearances from the likes of Jon Spencer, Mike Ladd, Roots Manuva and Saul Williams. The singles 'Everything Is Under Control' and 'Man In A Garage' are surely already gouged in your memory. Coldcut is still the duo Jonathan More and Matt Black who have been standing at the helm since the mid 80's. Their single 'Say Kids, What Time Is It'? released in '87 was the first record in the UK that was completely compiled of samples. The very same year the ground breaking and timeless remix of 'Paid In Full' (Erik B & Rakim) was released. In '90 they started the notorious Ninja Tune label (and later the more hip-hop oriented Big Dada) on which a load of albums appeared from talent like The Cinematic Orchestra, Kid Koala and Roots Manuva. Their famous Stealth-club and 'Solid Steel' radio shows still inspire generations to this day. With tracks like 'Timber' and 'Atomic Moog 2000' they emphasized their anti-corporate, ecological and anti-authoritarian attitude. At the same time, Coldcut developed their own VJ software - called VJamm, with which live images can be manipulated in the same way as sound. This software even made it into The American Museum of Moving Image. The ABClub concert earlier this year was sold out in no time, so get in on time!
Special guest vocals are this time from ROBERT OWENS and MIKE LADD. Robert Owens floated to the top during the heyday of the Chicago house in the second half of the 80's. He was once described by Muzik as 'The Greatest Male Voice in Dance Music' and could recently be heard on 'Mine To Give' from Photek. Rapper MIKE LADD (see also: Infesticons/Majesticons) could already be heard on the single 'Everything Is Under Control', currently resides in Paris and is considered as one of the most innovative rappers of the moment (see: his collaboration with pianist Vijay Iyer).
PLEASE NOTE: contribute to CCTV (COLDCUT-TV)!
Coldcut asks you film as much as possible during this concert (a piece of the concert, audience, funny situations, atmosphere). Do it with your mobile phone or mini camera! The images can be sent to ninja tune. All the material will be updated weekly on coldcut. The best footage will receive a bag full of goodies. After Coldcut's world tour the duo will select the best material for the 'Sound Mirrors' DVD.
11:00 pm DICTAPHONE (D)
Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid are convinced that the wasteland where electronica and acoustic jazz meet is yet to be seriously explored. Well, with Domino we're more than happy to offer a platform for this sort of exploration. We already presented the Triosk from Australia last year, this year it will be DICTAPHONE. Dictaphone is a collaborative project with Brussels born multi-instrumentalist Oliver Doerell (see also: SWOD) and saxophonist/clarinet player Roger Döring. They make, in their own words, slow motion jazz. The combination of genuine electronica with sax, melodica and clarinet sounds innovative and melancholy. 'Timeless, unusual and beautiful. According to WIRE man Colin Newman. You can easily imagine a marriage between The Cinematic Orchestra and Boards Of Canada. Their second, again exceptionally magical album 'Vertigo II' will be released soon on the City Centre Offices label from Berlin.
