MNML SSGS comes to Air for the first time to continue its mission of advancing quality, innovative electronic music. Joining us for this party is Silent Servant (Juan Mendez) from Los Angeles. Mendez has developed a name for himself as a key figure in techno music through his role in the Sandwell District collective and now spearheading the Jealous God label, which he runs with Regis and James Ruskin. Following the end of Sandwell District, Silent Servant has quickly moved ahead in further refining his sound, what he calls ‘mutant techno’. Building on the approach to techno honed through the Sandwell District years, Silent Servant has been incorporating a wide range of older influences – post-punk, EBM, minimal wave – and distilling them into a powerful and arresting take on contemporary techno. His distinctive sounds will be on full display at Air, where he will be performing his A/V live show for the first time in Japan. In addition to the liveset, Silent Servant will also be delivering one of his trademark DJ sets. This is a great opportunity to hear one of the most interesting voices in contemporary techno.
Silent Servant will be supported by a number of key figures in Japan’s techno scene. Kouhei Matsunaga will be performing live as NHK’Koyxen, the alias under which he has released a series of well-received LPs on PAN Records that have explored the out-reaches of the dancefloor. Formerly of Osaka and now based in Berlin, Matsunaga has developed an international reputation for both his solo work and his collaborations with many key figures in electronic music, such as Sean Booth (from Autechre), Mika Vainio, Merzbow and Sensational. The broken techno of NHK’Koyxen will be an excellent complement to the sounds of Silent Servant.
On the decks, we are very happy to welcome back DJ Nobu, Japan’s undisputed techno don. At this point, there is not much left to say about Nobu. He continues to lead the way for techno in this country through his DJing and his Future Terror parties. Following Nobu will be another member of Future Terror, Haruka, who will be joining us for the first time. Haruka continues to develop as a DJ and looks set to be an important figure in the coming years. Completing the mainfloor lineup will be the co-founder of MNML SSGS, Chris SSG, who will be opening the night with a drone and bass set.
Upstairs in the lounge, we are very happy to welcome the FISH collective, with DJ sets from Michihiko Ishidomaru, CHIRO, mat P.I.G.S., DJ Soybeans, and YU. Here you will have an opportunity to hear the sounds of the young generation of electronic music in Tokyo.
MNML SSGS has always tried to support forward thinking electronic music. For us, Silent Servant is an artist that perfectly embodies the kind of sounds we are interested in. We’ve been working with him since 2008, and it is an absolute pleasure to welcome Silent Servant back to Tokyo in October. This is going to be a very proper session. Make sure you are there.
