Since 1999 Marcel is and has been a steady fixture at both the old OstGut and the new Berghain. The classic sounds of Chicago and Detroit have had a huge influence on him, but Marcel also says that the music and the sets have to work, should have a soul and be ignorant of boundaries. “I re-invent my dj philosophy for every new set, location and night. Generally, it is very important to me to play as varied as possible sets fusing classic tracks with the contemporary ones”.
Dettmann was born 50 kilometres outside of Berlin in Fürstenwalde. In 1992 he discovered Techno and immediately bought a pair of turntables at an age of 16 years. He promoted parties in Dresden and Frankfurt/Oder which gained him reputation eventually leading up to a residency at Berghain’s predecessor OstGut. Since 2004, he also works at Berlin’s record shop institution Hard Wax. The store’s excellent musical portfolio provides Dettmann with constant inspiration for his upcoming projects. “Music always works in a certain context at a certain time, or it doesn’t. There still are a lot of interesting, very varied artists and labels releasing loads of good stuff, be it classic or experimental”.
Two years later, he finally started to produce his own tracks. “Dawning/Dead Man Watches The Clock” on our label OstGut Ton is his first ever released record, a collaboration with another Berghain resident, Ben Klock. It received excellent feedback and managed to chart Groove Magazine’s Top 50 at number 2. His tracks for Ostgut Ton, his own imprint MDR and remixes for artists like Ellen Allien and labels like Rekids reflect the unique and bass heavy sound of the Berghain floor like no others. His understanding of Techno is very much influenced by an oldschool ethos, as he has been a Hard Wax customer long before he started to work there. His music is as much reduced to the basics as it is profound and in its roughness very distinct; altogether musical features derived from his experience as a dj. His sets will never feature Trance or overproduced records and when he goes Minimal it’s always reminiscent of Rob Hoods “Minimal Nation”.
