There are not many DJs who’ve been around as long as Louis Burns has, and there are not many people who could be trusted to bring us living History like he does. It must be, however, clarified: Lil’ Louis isn’t coming to Lisbon to talk about the past or rest on his laurels. He’s coming as living testimony of the rich and diverse tradition of House, using the title of Founding Father (more accurately, one of the founders), but he’s coming to celebrate the present. A present built on more than 30 years of music, that continues to shape itself record after record.
He became a DJ when dancefloors were fuelled by Disco and R n’ B and stood alongside legends like Frankie Knuckles and Marshall Jefferson as he watched the world changing musical phenomenon come to life and grow, driven by kids who wanted to make music with just drum machines and synthesizers. And they did. His first album, “From The Mind of Lil’ Louis”, released in 1989, might as well be considered one of the first notable House music albums, a highlight among EPs cut for more immediate consumption. “French Kiss”, one of the album’s singles, went on to sell more than 6 million copies and continues to sound as fresh as in the day when Louis, on the phone with a girlfriend, composed it.
With a documentary about House recently finished, Lil’ Louis even retired briefly from DJing, only to experience a triumphal return. According to him, the genre must stay uncomplicated, going back to basics to focus on telling a simple but beautiful story. This is a key opportunity for us to experience together what Chicago built: an experience that welcomes, unites and redeems.
