Eric San AKA Canada’s Kid Koala has got it all: DJ, Producer, Musician, Illustrator, Graphic Novelist, Bingo Caller, Pillow Fight adjudicator…the list goes on and on. A Kid Koala show is always an exceptional and intriguing one. Eric’s influences lie with Hip hop, Soul, Funk, Blues and Jazz from all ages and styles. He’s even known to bust out classic electro and beat juggle Tears for Fears’ Shout when performing live. Every single person goes home from a Kid Koala gig feeling like they’ve all played a part in a special occasion.
With a long and established career with Ninja Tune, Kid Koala’s records are always expertly crafted and fondly received. Hell, his last LP 12 Bit Blues even came with its own working cardboard record player kit! Now we bring Eric to London to host a party on the Thames. You just know this is going to be another wonderful evening.
Winding back a few years, Kid Koala burst onto the scene as a turntablist with the Scratchcratchratchatch mixtape, accompanied by his now trademark illustrations which adorn every single one of his releases. This caught the attention of Ninja Tune who released Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (the medical term for a condition turntables get when scratching too much) which is considered by many to be a milestone release for the label. More recently he devised a live action performance of his Graphic Novel Nufonia must fall, played out at a sold out The Roundhouse with puppets bringing his vision to life and Eric himself performing the soundtrack. With LP titles such as Some of my best friends are DJs and Your Mom’s favorite DJ, Kid Koala’s music is quirky, fun and often moving, especially when he performs his Moon River routine.
Soundcrash brings an artist bursting with invention, gives him some turntables, and invites him on to the deck of the Golden Jubilee, bound for the river Thames in the height of Summer. Need we say much more?
