Cacophonous Sarcophagus are proud to host the first UK outing of Jlin! Her debut album 'Dark Energy' grabbed us immediately back in March and refused to let go. Her following live set at UNSOUND Festival in October was THE best we saw last year!
'Dark Energy' has since gone on to top both The Quietus's & The Wire's Album of The Year, as well as featuring is practically every Top 10 list...DO NOT MISS!
"Jlin is the most prominent female footwork producer of the current generation. She grew up in Gary, Indiana, just 20 miles from downtown Chicago. Though previously using samples in her work, she now refuses to, and her tracks are composed of all original material. It's forceful, yet ripples with colour; it’s an intense, monolithic sound with rugged rhythms that stop and breathe and roll out in unusual staccato patterns. It’s a sound unlike any other out there, one that’s fiercely unique." - Planet Mu
“Dark Energy is a unique and self-contained piece of work: its creative depth and immaculate technical skill are impossible to ignore or resist, wherever you're listening from. In its breadth of ambition and stunningly realised sounds, it delivers more than just a new twist on an established style. Remaining tightly linked to the music of Jlin's forebears and contemporaries, it nonetheless maps out an inspiring and tantalising glimpse of electronic music's future.” - The Quietus
"Perhaps Jlin's strongest affinities lie not necessarily with other footwork artists such as her mentor RP Boo, but with someone like Shackleton or her collaborator Holly Herndon, artists who are loosely affiliated with genres or scenes but who carve their own niche, creating singular music that's difficult to place. Jlin has plenty to say, and she has a remarkably strong and distinctive voice with which to say it." - Resident Advisor
“By prioritizing rhythm over hooks, by turning away from looped vocal samples and toward a starker, more tensile vocabulary of snares and strings, Dark Energy immediately sounds like a benchmark, an outlier in terms of minimalist abstraction and intensity. - Tiny Mix Tapes
“Tense, thrilling, and a bit frightening, Dark Energy is simply one of the most compelling debut albums of 2015.” - Allmusic.com
[Hybrid DJ/Octatrack set]
(Tri Angle/Subtext/Planet Mu)
One half of seminal industrial dubstep outfit Vex'd (who recently reunited for the Planet Mu 20th anniversary), he now operates in even darker territory. In recent years Roly has concentrated his forces into long-form conceptual pieces, such as 2013's 'Life Cycle of a Massive Star', as well as working on BFI commissioned sci-fi/horror scores.
On Jan 22 he releases his next full length 'Third Law' via Tri Angle. Press materials describe the album as “a coming to terms with his goal of leaving dance music as it is, free to explore ideas of rhythm, bass, sound design within his own world without having to shape any of these elements to fit preconceived ideas or rules.”
However, on this night he will return to the “decks'n'FX” approach, playing anything that takes his fancy via an Elektron Octatrack system, allowing him an unprecedented ability to live-sample and manipulate tracks as they are played.
This hybrid set is certainly not one to miss!
Resident SCHWET DJs will also play experimental records throughout the night.
