Between 2006 and 2009, the monthly Turbo Crunk party had Montréal’s bass music scene firmly on lock. The night’s residents, which included Jacques Greene and Red Bull Music Academy alumni Lunice and Ango, eventually took the Turbo Crunk vision far beyond the city’s borders, shaping a sound of mutated, syrupy and club-ready hip-hop that resonated on a global scale. The posse also brought likeminded artists such as Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Machinedrum, Lazer Sword and Nosaj Thing to town, unifying a new generation of beatmakers and inspiring legions to follow in their footsteps. For one night only, Red Bull Music Academy will bring the Turbo Crunk crew back together for the 2016 Academy edition in Montréal. They will be joined by shape-shifting American producer Machinedrum, hip-hop innovator Clams Casino, LuckyMe stalwart Eclair Fifi, Academy participant Suicideyear and yet-to-be-disclosed special guests. Mixpak crew members Dre Skull and Jubilee, Fake Accent founder Tygapaw and Ninja Tune affiliate Ghostbeard will head up the dancehall-flavored second room.
