On 3rd March, four of modern minimal’s most revered DJs and key producers descend on Oval Space: Swiss maestro Sonja Moonear, a live performance from new Perlon signing Ion Ludwig, Time Passages boss Binh, and Berlin-based wunderproducer Spacetravel.
Perlon mainstay; Ricardo Villalobos’ protegé; collector and DJ of sublime electronic music in all styles, rhythms and textures: Sonja Moonear is all this and more. The Swiss native specialises in a lean, trippy style of house and techno whose spiritual home is Club Der Visionaere, and whose founding father is old German master Zip. Indeed, Moonear’s rise to prominence is closely entwined with the diminutive Perlon founder. Having hosted Zip during her residency at Geneva’s famed Weetamix, she was invited to warm the floor at Get Perlonized, and hasn’t looked back since. Now a regular at clubbing institutions Robert Johnson, Panorama Bar and CDV, Moonear is simply one of the very finest DJs in dance music. In Sonja’s hands, you might hear shuffling minimal mixed with acid house, or electro into dub techno, but always bridged by subtle transitions that never sound rushed or disjointed. No one has an ear for groove quite like her - not even her onetime mentor, Ricardo Villalobos.
She’s joined by three other artists who are also closely entwined with the Perlon crew. Dutch producer Ion Ludwig is a new member of the family, having just announced a collaborative EP with Franky Greiner under the joint moniker Alter Mahnn. At the heart of it, minimal dance music is a tension between personality and economy, and Ludwig understands this better than any of his nu-skool contemporaries. For records on Trelik, Eklo and Lick My Deck, he has perfected a sparse aesthetic that remains imbued with a rich musicality. Also on the bill for 3rd March, man-of-the-moment Binh. It’s been quite a year for the Berlin-based DJ and producer. His release catalogue has exploded with records for Perlon, Treatment and his own Time Passages, while his forthcoming album for Nicolas Lutz’s My Own Jupiter is one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Also no stranger to superbly constructed techno and minimal, Italian prodigy Spacetravel rounds out the lineup. First introduced with a now modern classic EP for Time Passages, Spacetravel is one of 2016’s producers du jour, having since released on Vera and Alexandra’s Melliflow, and of course, a stunning debut album on Perlon.
