1 YEAR OF OVERGROUND
L E G O W E L T
Legowelt is undoubtedly one of the most innovative and influential figures in the past two decades of underground dance music, and he’s something of a personal hero - so it's among the greatest privileges to announce that Overground’s first birthday party will play host to Legowelt's first Edinburgh show in some 8 years.
There are few artists I’ve nerded out over as much as Legowelt. His website is a constant stream of hilarious webzines, generous synth/drum machine samples, bootleg edits and free tracks. Whether it be in the form of an RBMA lecture, documentary cameo, interview, sketch, studio tour or production tutorial - his online presence makes him one of the most entertaining and loveable figures in the game.
Such is the diversity of his genre-spanning discography that you've probably heard tunes released under of some of his many aliases without even realising who was behind them! Whether he's producing jacking ghetto trax under Raheem Hershel, lo-fi house under Seaside Houz Boyz, space age electro under Squadra Blanco, or any one of his collaborative projects with Xosar, Willie Burns, Orgue Electronique or Andreas Gehm among many others - his work rarely falls short of perfection.

📖 XTENDED BIO
There is no one like Legowelt. His vast musical output spans many different worlds – some real, some imagined - and does so in a unique and captivating fashion that keeps listeners enthralled. Since first emerging in the early nineties as a key part of the Dutch West Coast scene and Intergalactic FM family, he has become a core member of that crew who takes inspiration from Detroit and Chicago pioneers but also fantasy films and sci-fi culture, and is nowadays a modern day techno pin-up in his own rite.
Perenially fascinated by old and battered noise-making machines, his dizzying output is defined by analogue textures and classic values as well as an ever-roaming sense of sonic investigation that veers from techno to freaky house deepness via old school acid. A producer with a rare sense of humor, Legowelt’s productions come thick and fast but always retain high levels of quality assurance. They land on labels like Clone, L.I.E.S., Peoples Potential Unlimited and Crème Organization in the form of myriad EPs but also well received full lengths like The Paranormal Soul and Crystal Cult 2080.
Of course, Danny Wolfers records under myriad aliases but Legowelt is his most celebrated ever since he hit the charts with 2002’s ‘Disco Rout’, a track that really put him on the map. The ensuing years have seen him forever tweaking his mystical, misty and mystic forest techno sounds and have seen him grow in demand as a live performer. When playing in clubs around the world he creates captivating sound tracks on the fly, soundtracks that force listeners to play imaginary films in their heads and dance non stop. Legowelt, then, is a true performer, creator and innovator with a fierce work rate that puts the rest of the world to shame.
What's more, rarely does a year go by when he doesn't release an essential album. Most frequently producing as Legowelt, his unique style comes form an unfaltering devotion to hardware, be it old, new or totally knackered. Jamming all day long on music making toys, his output veers from dense and foresty techno to whizzing electro, deeper electronic and stuff for which there isn't even a name yet. Clone, L.I.E.S., Creme Organization, Peoples Potential Unlimited, Dekmantel, you name it, they have all come calling for the man's music. Quite simply the guy is an artist and musical force that cannot be stopped.
He has had some mainstream exposure with Disco Rout, originally released on a Ghostly International compilation but licensed by Cocoon Recordings for a full vinyl release, and subsequently voted track of the year 2002 by the German music magazine, Groove.
Legowelt began producing music in the early 1990s after he came in contact with the sounds of Detroit's Underground Resistance, Model 500, Blake Baxter (probably his all-time favourite producer) and Chicago heroes such as Farley Jackmaster Funk, Armando Gallop and Mr. Fingers. Later this palette of influences grew with early µ-Ziq, Aphex Twin, Drexciya, and various releases from the Irdial Discs label.
He marks his major influence as Unit Moebius, after he heard them on the radio. He describes their sound as "a punky palette of RAW freaked out Lo-fi Chicago trax and deep detroit jams made with machines which were found next to the garbage can." It was a surprise to him when he later learned that this music came out of The Hague, Holland, the same city he lived in. He later visited the Bunker Records office where he was taken under the wing of such musical mentors as I-f and Melvin White (aka pametex). He claims they "lectured him with even more unknown sounds such as early electro and the obscure pre-1983 Italian disco whose production secrets were closely studied." In 1998 Bunker released Legowelt's first vinyl album, Pimpshifter, a 6-track which became an instant cult hit with tracks such as "Sturmvogel" and "Total Pussy Control". Apart from producing, Legowelt has been playing live all over the world for the last five years, spending a lot of time together with Orgue Electronique and the infamous Bunker Team.
Some aliases and side projects he has are Catnip (with Luke Eargoggle), The Chicago Shags (with Orgue Electronique), Gladio, Smackos, Smackulator (with Speculator), Squadra Blanco, Salamandos, Raheem Hershel and Venom 18. Most of the music of Danny Wolfers is published by Clone Publishing from Rotterdam. Clone also co-released Legowelt's greatest hits album together with Bunker records. In 2006 Legowelt started his own label called Strange life records.
Danny Wolfers is the host of the weekly Astro Unicorn Radio Show on Intergalactic FM, an internet radio station. He presents the show using his Smackos alias, and plays a broad range of music including many of his own productions. It was in 2007 that Wolfers started hosting this show on the Cybernetic Broadcasting System, the predecessor of Intergalactic FM.
