“Pushing a sound that really does it for me and hasn't reached its full potential and continually finding fresh things within it,” says Hyper of his attachment to the breaks.
Hyper’s sound – be it DJ sets, productions or his Kilowatt label - have all become instruments in his push to take breaks into the realms of forward thinking electronic music. The Y3K compilations, hailed as some of the most genre-expanding breaks albums to date, made album of the month in DJ, Muzik, Mixmag, Wax and Ministry to name but a few. Although Hyper shrugs off the term progressive in the ‘house’ sense, despite labelling his Y3K mixes ‘Deep Progressive Breaks’.
“I called my first Y3K compilation 'Deep Progressive Breaks'. It was only ever meant to mean forward thinking though not Prog as in Prog House!”
Kilowatt continues to pump out the breakbeats like a well honed beat breaking operation, a fact that Hyper relishes. He’s justifiably proud of the outfits (some of the best on the breaks scene) he is providing a musical outlet for and the future looks bright for the label.
“Stir Fry is awesome. I'm biased because he is on my Kilowatt label but he has just been producing for Oakenfold and has produced and engineered for both Sasha and BT in the past also. His new Stir Fry thing is going off!”
”Artist led album projects [are the future for Kilowatt]. Terminalhead are first up with the Weekend Warriors album and have an awesome live show and a very diverse sounding album to boot. New stuff from Fatliners (Flying could be the biggest breaks tune of the year!) and we are looking to sign False Prophet aka PMT.”
Hyper’s unique DJ sets, pushing forward breaks, have earned him the respect of fellow pioneers Adam Freeland and Tayo and legend-lad John Digweed. Hyper is now a bimonthly resident in the breaks room at Digweed’s now infamous Bedrock night, as well as Hybrid’s new club night, helping him fulfil his aim of spreading the beats of breaks and converting the house hordes to a his agenda.
”I want to get the sound heard by the masses basically and work in a job which gives satisfaction and enjoyment!”
Hyper (UK) happens @ Lot 33, Canberra, Friday August 23 alongside the best local break-layers Anjay, Mikah Freeman & Typhonic. Tix on the door.
