The 2016 season begins next week. If you're partying on the White Isle this summer, here's what you need to know.
Even so, huge shifts are afoot. Space, one of the most iconic and best-loved nightclubs in the world, is closing at the end of the summer. The keys will be handed over to the team behind neighbouring Ushuaïa, so it's anyone's guess what the future holds for the Playa D'en Bossa site. One thing's for sure, though, Carl Cox will not feature in the plans. After 15 years helming Tuesday nights, he's calling time on his residency. It's the end of an era, but there's a silver lining. The next five months are likely to be some of the liveliest in Space and Cox's history, which is saying something. The highlight? It's gotta be the big man's all-night closing set on September 20th.
In other news, the island waits with bated breath to see if Ibiza's governing body follows through with the proposed 6:30 AM closing times for all clubs. If they do, the venue worst affected will be Amnesia, which last year was warned and then fined for repeatedly breaching its licence. Music On and Cocoon, in particular, thrive in these illicit dawn hours, so it's possible the new law will hit them hard. A similar law extends to beach parties, which now must shut by midnight. Given how much they suffered at the hands of the authorities last year, this could put an end to them altogether.
There is, however, plenty to look forward to. Maceo Plex's Mosaic By Maceo is the most high-profile new party, and probably the most intriguing in terms of bookings. Will Pearson Sound, Matrixxman and Lord Of The Isles work at Pacha? One DJ who feels like a sure thing is Luciano, whose Vagabundos clan is back at Pacha for the first time since 2012, as part of Insane. Other notable events for 2016 include Unusual Suspects at Sankeys (Binh, Vera, Petre Inspirescu), Tale Of Us's Afterlife residency at Space (Giegling, Voices From The Lake, Bob Moses), the return of DJ Harvey's Monday all-nighters at Pikes, and Zoo Project, which celebrates its tenth birthday this summer. A special mention should also go to Joseph Capriati, who's left Music On in search of pastures new, namely Solomun +1, Carl Cox, Elrow and Paradise, where he'll play seven dates. All in all, it should be another hot, hectic and happy few months—even if they could signal the end of Ibiza as we know it.
Cocoon and Papa Sven are hosting more parties than ever in 2016.
Cocoon @ Amnesia
Cocoon had a spring clean in 2015, replacing old DJs with new ones in an attempt to freshen things up. It was a gamble, but it paid off—Sven Väth and the gang enjoyed one of their best summers in recent memory. For 2016 they're sticking to a similar formula, albeit it with a few nips and tucks. Out go Joy Orbison and Eats Everything, and in come Rødhad, KiNK and Tim Green. Raresh and Joris Voorn return for the first time since 2013 and 2012 respectively. Sonja Moonear and Nina Kraviz have four slots each, while Adam Beyer and Ricardo Villalobos have six. But as ever, the biggest news centres on Väth. He headlines 15 of the 19 weeks, the most he's ever committed to the residency since it launched in '99.
Holi Garden Festival Ibiza @ Benimussa Park
Chuck clouds of coloured paint at your mates while dancing to a summery house soundtrack.
Circoloco @ DC-10
When it comes to writing about Circoloco's summer, there's usually only the opening party lineup to go on. But that really tells all you need to know: this year, like the previous 17, will feature a weekly rotating cast of heavyweight residents (Seth Troxler, The Martinez Brothers, Apollonia), returning guests (Jackmaster, DVS1, Gerd Janson) and the odd new face (tINI, John Talabot, David August). Tale Of Us appear at the opening, but it's likely they won't play many more Mondays, given their new residency at Space. And then there's Konstantin, who's back for a third time. Giegling and Circoloco are an unlikely pairing, but it's partly thanks to curveball bookings like these that the party has remained at the top of its game for so long.
Mansion @ Eden
Mansion parties are apparently popular with celebrities, so expect to hear a mix of chart pop, house and EDM.
Retro @ Es Paradis
Club classics with Paul Taylor and Davos.
DJ Harvey presents Mercury Rising @ Ibiza Rocks House
Anyone who attended one of DJ Harvey's extended sessions at Ibiza Rocks House (AKA Pikes) last year will be thrilled to learn that it's back for a second summer. This time he'll extend his run an extra week, playing seven all-night sets across August and September. It was one of Ibiza's best parties of 2015, and the same should be true in 2016.
Flower Power @ Pacha
Island veteran DJ Piti makes way for Maceo Plex, moving Flower Power to Mondays. He presents a weekly blend of classic rock, soul, pop and more.
EDX No Xcuses @ Privilege
Prepare for plenty of uplifting vocals and big drops from the Spinnin' Records signee.
The Redlight @ Sankeys
This in-house triumph will double in size this summer, filling the Basement and The Lab with the best in club-ready house (Todd Terry, Sonny Fodera), UK garage (DJ EZ, Matt Jam Lamont, Todd Edwards) and grime (Big Narstie).
ONYX @ Space
It's techno all the way with this new night from Russian DJ Mikaela. Sets are locked in from the likes of Blawan, Dave Clarke, Dasha Rush, Rebekah, Fritz Kalkbrenner and Surgeon & Lady Starlight. Pay special attention to September 5th, when Juan Atkins and Moritz Von Oswald present their new Borderland live show.
NERVO Nation @ Ushuaïa
Six weeks of jacked-up EDM courtesy of the Australian duo.
David Guetta BIG @ Ushuaïa
The Frenchman promises to go, well, bigger at this year's poolside residency.
Carl Cox's swansong season should include countless unforgettable dance floor moments.
Together. @ Amnesia
With Defected out of the picture, Together. will stretch out across Amnesia's two rooms for 16 weeks of in-your-face grime, dubstep, house, UK garage and drum & bass. Chase & Status, Hannah Wants, Rudimental, Andy C, Mistajam, Kurupt FM, Gorgon City and So Solid Crew have all been tapped for multiple slots.
HY-PWA @ Eden
Kiss FM's DJ Shortee Blitz is manning the decks, so expect upfront urban flavours all-night long.
tINI and the gang @ Lips / Underground
tINI's free party was one of a handful that fell victim to heavy policing on Playa D'en Bossa last summer, which may have contributed to her decision to pull back a bit this time round. She'll visit on five occasions, each time overseeing a daytime session at Lips before continuing the fun at Underground into the next morning. Voigtmann, Oskar Offermann, Funk E, Harry McCanna, Bill Patrick and Jan Krueger will all step up.
Mosaic By Maceo @ Pacha
Were it not for the end of Space, Maceo Plex's move to Pacha would have easily been the biggest story of Ibiza 2016. It was only a matter of time—Plex has been turning down offers from most of the main clubs for years. Interesting, then, that he settled on Pacha, a venue that until a few weeks ago he'd never played. Even more interesting is the music policy, a mix of dark and dreamy techno and house played by artists not associated with Ibiza, let alone Pacha. But if anyone is going to bring the likes of Daniel Avery, Lord Of The Isles, Patrice Scott, Pearson Sound, Voiski, Matrixxman, Paranoid London and Conforce to the island and make it work, it's Plex. As he said himself: "It can be done in that space, you just need to go when the right person is playing for the right crowd."
Ibiza Paint Party @ Privilege
Electro house, EDM and shitloads of paint in the world's biggest club.
Applebum @ Sankeys
The old-school hip-hop and R&B night will bed down at Sankeys for 13 weeks, bringing a fresh sound to the club. No expense has been spared—DJ Premier, Slum Village, Grandmaster Flash, Jazzy Jeff and Coolio are all flying in—so this might just work.
Carl Cox @ Space
After 15 mind-blowingly successful seasons, Carl Cox is bowing out with the club that helped him become Ibiza's best-loved DJ. But before the curtain falls for good, Cox will helm 15 weeks in the company of some of the biggest acts in techno and house. Danny Tenaglia, Marco Carola, Nina Kraviz, François K, Masters At Work, Loco Dice, Chris Liebing, Adam Beyer and Fatboy Slim are just a fraction of the overall offering, which should tell you just how big a send-off is in the works for this larger-than-life UK veteran.
Space Beach Club @ Space
Outside of the name, details on this party are scarce. All we know is that it'll go down at the club on May 31st, June 7th and September 27th.
Hardwell DNA @ Ushuaïa
Hands-in-the-air EDM from one of the biggest stars in the game.
Revealed @ Ushuaïa
Hardwell's influence extends beyond his own residency to Revealed, showcasing artists from the Dutchman's label of the same name across two dates in June. (He won't appear at either.)
"Virtual Trip" is the theme for year-five of Jamie Jones's Paradise party at DC-10.
HYTE @ Amnesia
Dozens of new nights open in Ibiza every summer, but few are bold and dedicated enough to return. This will be HYTE's second season in San Rafael, and the lineups suggest a refined, reliable approach: go big on the tried-and-tested superstars. Chris Liebing, Loco Dice and Pan-Pot will head up 13, 12 and 11 dates respectively, supported along the way by the likes of Floorplan, DJ Harvey and Caribou, who play live on July 20th. There's also Enzo Siragusa's Fuse party to consider, who are on board for five takeovers—four in the Main Room and one in the Terrace. That partnership could be what takes HYTE to the next level in 2016.
Paradise @ DC-10
In five years, Jamie Jones's Paradise party has grown from a one-roomed experiment fronted by a breakthrough DJ into a full-club blowout helmed by one of dance music's most popular acts. The lineups have always been strong, but there's never been any doubt that it's Jones that pulls the crowds. That balance of power might tip slightly this time around, as Joseph Capriati comes on board for seven shows, the most for any guest in the party's history. Otherwise, it's the usual mix of regulars (Maya Jane Coles, Craig Richards, Âme, KiNK, Mathew Jonson), sturdy Ibiza draws (Luciano, Adam Beyer, Sasha, Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed) and newcomers (The Black Madonna, Mood II Swing, Daniel Bell).
Ibiza Rocks @ Ibiza Rocks Hotel
Still the best place in Ibiza if you need a break from house and techno. Major Lazer, Dizzee Rascal, Skrillex, Faithless, All Saints and LCD Soundsystem are all headlining year 11.
Martin Solveig My House @ Pacha
Mainstream house and a bit more besides from the Pacha mainstay.
Dance 88/89 @ Sankeys
For a place so concerned with its past, there's surprisingly little musical nostalgia on offer in Ibiza. Step forward Dance 88/89, a new party paying homage to the glory years of acid house, Balearic and rave. The biggest names from the era have all signed up, from The Haçienda's Graeme Park to Danny Rampling, Nicky Holloway, Mr. C, Fabio & Grooverider, Terry Farley, Ratpack, Evil Eddie Richards and the man who started it all, DJ Alfredo. Dance 88/89 could be this summer's surprise hit.
La Troya @ Space
Brasilio's polysexual extravaganza departs Amnesia for Space.
Steve Aoki Neon Future @ Ushuaïa
Is neon cake a thing?
Axwell / \ Ingrosso @ Ushuaïa
12 weeks of EDM anthems from the Swedish superstars.
Solomun at Ushuaïa? Yep, and he'll be accompanied by a different live act at all three events.
Cream @ Amnesia
The big story over at Cream HQ concerns Fatboy Slim, who will play seven times as part of his first Ibiza residency. Trance titans Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren and Above & Beyond also feature.
Rhythm & Waves @ Cova Santa
Amnesia and Together. join forces for three consecutive weeks in July, hosting live performances from UK chart-toppers Chase & Status, Rudimental, Katy B and Tinie Tempah. It'll help that the setting, Cova Santa, is one of the island's most breathtaking spots.
Luciano & Friends @ Destino Ibiza
No lineups yet but you know the drill: hand claps and loopy tech house aplenty from the Cadenza head.
Solomun + LIVE @ Destino Ibiza
This one is the same deal as the Ushuaïa shows, except Solomun will do four at the glitzy Pacha-owned venue.
Cliché @ Es Paradis
Urban beats from DJs like Tim Westwood and Scottie B.
Wax Da Jam @ Las Dalias
Nightmares On Wax's breezy soiree channels the old Ibiza, where people roamed freely at parties and DJs played a little bit of everything, so long as it was funky. Andrew Ashong, Daddy G and island debutant Kaytronik, AKA Karizma, join regulars like Negghead and Jon Sa Trinxa for four nights at the charming Las Dalias.
OpenLab @ Heart Ibiza
Chilled sounds at Heart Ibiza, from the brains behind the popular Ibiza radio station.
F*** Me I'm Famous @ Pacha
David Guetta's main residency is still probably the highest-grossing night on the island.
Unusual Suspects @ Sankeys
This new residency is the odd one out at Sankeys this summer, booking minimal-leaning DJs who pull a big European crowd. Taking place in the Basement, an underrated room fitted with one of the island's best soundsystems, the party will host an eye-catching cast of selectors, including Binh, Petre Inspirescu, Vera, Barac, Francesco Del Garda and Eli Verveine. Not since the heady days of [a:rpia:r] at DC-10 has this music thrived in Ibiza—Unusual Suspects could change that.
Afterlife @ Space
Second to Carl Cox, Tale Of Us's Afterlife residency is the most exciting thing about Space's final season. It'll help fill the gap left by ENTER., pushing a similar brand of big-room techno and house (Dixon, Rødhåd, Mano Le Tough). There is a solid chunk of nerdy bookings too, from Voices From The Lake, Tin Man and Solar, to the full Giegling squad (Konstantin, ATEQ, Kettenkarussell, Vril, Sa Pa). Like Mosaic By Maceo, it's another example of a top-tier act using their profile to curate something with a little more personality. There's no way Afterlife won't be a huge success.
Symmetry @ Space
This annual in-house series is a warm-up for what's to come, running every Thursday in June. Tiga and George FitzGerald play the first, while Kompakt handle the last, with Gui Boratto and Michael Mayer. The two in between are still TBA.
Blue @ Ushuaïa
The new party from Robin Schulz and Oliver Heldens, who tag team across seven dates.
Kygo @ Ushuaïa
There isn't a sound better suited to Ushuaïa than Kygo's tropical house. The rising star will play live on three occasions.
Solomun + LIVE @ Ushuaïa
We're yet to find out the live acts, but they'll perform alongside Solomun across three dates at Ushuaïa. It will be the Diynamic chief's first time playing the open-air venue.
Solid Grooves @ Vista Club
As the name suggests, this London-based label and club night deals in chunky tech house built for the dance floor. Steve Bug, Yousef, Robert Dietz, Dense & Pika, Anja Schneider and Huxley are some of many names playing the beautiful Vista Club.
It's hard to predict anything but another rampantly successful summer for Marco Carola and Music On.
Music On @ Amnesia
Few things on the island are more certain than the continued success of Music On, which is true for a simple reason: Marco Carola's brawny tech house sound and boisterous DJ style are more popular now than ever before. But if the proposed 6:30 AM closing times are enforced, then Music On will be one of the parties hardest hit—as everyone knows, Carola weaves his darkest magic when the sun comes up. However the situation pans out, it's still hard to imagine Amnesia not being packed and lively every Friday.
Judgement @ Eden
Judge Jules in full pomp.
Fiesta Del Agua @ Es Paradis
80,000 litres of water are poured over 4,000 ravers at the daddy of all water parties.
Boogie In Wonderland @ Heart Ibiza
Not much is known about this new party, except that the décor will be sparkly and it'll run for 17 weeks.
W.A.R! @ Ibiza Rocks Hotel
Raucous sounds from Ibiza Rocks' fiery younger brother. Stormzy fans take note: he's making five appearances across the summer.
Insane @ Pacha
Insane is Pacha to a T: fun, accessible dance music set to a colourful backdrop. The big news this year surrounds Luciano's Vagabundos, which is back at the club for the first time since 2012. Luciano and various Cadenza artists will oversee seven dates. The other 14 dates have been shared between Hot Since 82 (three), Nic Fanciulli (five) and Pacha favourite MK (six), with Sasha, Bicep, Matthew Dear, Guti, Guy Gerber, Hannah Wants and Groove Armada just some of the artists coming along for the ride.
I Am A Richbitch @ Privilege
Booty-shaking urban music inside Privilege's cavernous main space.
Abode @ Sankeys
Abode has been killing it in London recently, so the White Isle switch felt like a question of when and not if. Oliver $, Citizenn, Ejeca, Ben Pearce and Alexis Raphael are among the confirmed guests.
Glitterbox @ Space
With Defected's flagship Ibiza residency on hiatus this summer, it's left to Glitterbox to rep for the UK powerhouse across 17 weeks in the Space Terrace. We're approaching year three now, so you know what to expect: classic, feel-good house, disco and soul played by some of the biggest names in the business—Basement Jaxx, Kenny Dope, Roger Sanchez, Todd Terry, Louie Vega, Joey Negro, Horse Meat Disco.
Armin Van Buuren @ Ushuaïa
Two evenings of unadulterated trance brought to you by a behemoth of the sound.
Disturbing Ibiza @ Ushuaïa
Tinie Tempah fronts his own party across six weeks at Ushuaïa.
Multiply @ Ushuaïa
He's only 20, but already Martin Garrix is one of the biggest EDM stars on the planet. He's got eight shows at Ushuaïa.
The Zoo Project will celebrate its tenth anniversary with another 17 weeks of open-air fun.
Espuma Foam Party @ Amnesia
Get all foamy to the sound of Amnesia residents Caal Smile and Les Schmitz.
Foam & Diamonds hosted by Paris Hilton @ Amnesia
Matinee @ Amnesia
It's a largely Spanish crowd at this gay-friendly party, which is known for its raunchy onstage performances.
The Zoo Project @ Benimussa Park
The Zoo Project is a breath of fresh air in Ibiza's club circuit, with none of the hassles that come with partying in a jam-packed super club. The site is beautiful, the drinks are cheaper and everyone's relaxed and friendly. The biggest win, though, is its music policy, which centres on deep house and techno from across Europe and the UK. There aren't any lineups for this season yet, but given that the party will be celebrating its tenth anniversary, rest assured they'll pack a punch.
Sintillate @ Eden
The VIP party specialists try their hand with a San An crowd.
Garlands Ibiza @ Es Paradis
Liverpool's long-running party promises large-scale theatrics and Ibiza hits.
Pure Pacha - Paris By Night @ Pacha
The White Isle meets the city of love via Bob Sinclar.
SuperMartXé @ Privilege
A storm of sex, LEDs and EDM should hit you upon arrival at Privilege, and it won't recede until you leave.
Tribal Sessions @ Sankeys
Sankeys' storied house and techno party has changed its approach for 2016. Out go the US and European names that were the party's backbone, and in come current UK favourites like Josh Butler, Miguel Campbell, Riton, Bontan and Secondcity. It's a shrewd move by a club that knows its audience.
Elrow Ibiza @ Space
It's not hard to understand why Elrow has been a huge hit in Ibiza: it offers a clubbing experience like no other. For the first time, the Barcelona troupe will spread out across Space's three main rooms, hosting headline acts in the Discoteca (Seth Troxler, Matador, Dusky, Art Department), smaller artists in the Sunset Terrace (Adam Shelton, Lauren Lane) and a new concept in the Terrace, which will see one DJ play all night with bespoke decor themed around his or her hometown. But as ever, the music at Elrow is secondary to the production, which is incredibly flamboyant and totally unparalleled.
ANTS @ Ushuaïa
Ushuaïa has gone heavier than ever on EDM in 2016, but there will always be a slot for its house and techno party ANTS. Don't be fooled, though: the production on Saturdays can often outshine the midweek events, displaying some of the most spectacular visuals, pyrotechnics and costumes around. It's a festival-sized operation that requires a suitably big soundtrack—DJ Sneak, Andrea Oliva, Kölsch, Joris Voorn and Maya Jane Coles will all play in the coming months.
New name, same deal. Steve Lawler and the warriors should clean up in the coming months.
House Of Madness @ Amnesia
More horror costumes, laser shows and potent EDM from Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike.
People From Ibiza @ Amnesia
Festival-sized techno and house from acts like Technasia, Mark Knight, Wankelmut and Claptone.
Rumors @ Destino Ibiza
Guy Gerber has a new home, which he'll be sharing weekly with Cassy, Sasha, Matthew Dear, Red Axes, dOP, Dubfire and others.
Format X The Soundgarden @ Eden
Prog veteran Nick Warren celebrates 25 years in Ibiza with another 15 Sundays in San Antonio.
Glow Neon Paint Party @ Es Paradis
More buckets of paint, except this time it glows in the dark.
Children Of The '80s @ Hard Rock Hotel
Nostalgic pop and cheese performed live.
Acid Sundays @ Heart Ibiza
Acid Pauli curates 19 nights of trippy techno, house and more.
Craig David's TS5 @ Ibiza Rocks Hotel
Big Narstie, Matt Jam Lamont and DJ Zinc will join the revitalized R&B singer across eight poolside dates. Get ready to sing along to all your old favourites.
Steve Lawler presents Warriors @ Sankeys Ibiza
Sunday nights at Sankeys may have had a slight name change, but what's on offer will remain every bit as triumphant as seasons past. It's been the club's main breadwinner for a while now, and with Skream, Eats Everything, Huxley, Denney and Guti all set to join Steve Lawler in the coming months, you'd have to think that things will stay that way.
Solomun +1 @ Pacha
When Solomun +1 launched in 2013, many questioned the concept: will it work with only two names? Is Solomun big enough? In the three summers since, the Hamburg-raised DJ/producer has answered both questions with an emphatic yes. Year four is shaping up to be his biggest yet, with debut slots for Richie Hawtin, Joseph Capriati, Damian Lazarus and Black Coffee alongside return appearances from Sven Väth, Dixon and Âme.
Sundays At Space @ Space
It was fitting that Space reclaimed Sundays for its grand finale, but the way they initially went about it raised some eyebrows. Before it was renamed Sundays At Space, it was called We Love, even though it bore no relation to the seminal Ibiza party of the same name. Once some order had been restored, Space's in-house team began drawing up this year's vast lineup, which spans everything from 2ManyDJs, Danny Tenaglia, Derrick Carter and Darius Syrossian to Daniel Avery, The Black Madonna and Annie Mac. Together, Space and Sundays make one of dance music's great partnerships, so if you're after that one final quintessential Space experience, then look no further. (Also, keep an eye on July 24th, when the club celebrates its 27th and final birthday.)
Avicii @ Ushuaïa
Catch the Swedish boy wonder before he says goodbye to the industry for good.
Materia @ Vista Club
Marco Bailey helms this new techno party, inviting Julian Jewell, Rebekah, Marcel Fengler, Markus Suckut, Vril and more to pummel Vista Club into shape.
