  • Glasgow's DJ Harri has added a Melbourne stop to his upcoming Australian tour, dropping into Mercat X Hotel for a set tomorrow night. Harri, who'll be playing his Australian debut this weekend, is a 20-year veteran of Glasgow's Sub Club. Recent years have seen Harri venture further into production, collaborating with Scottish disco maven The Revenge. While he has a strong grounding in house, Harri also has a long-standing affiliation with two of Scotland's most recognised techno exports, Slam and Silicone Soul, both of whom have deep ties with Sub Club as residents. We caught up with Harri over e-mail last week, where he told us about his recent collaborations, being a resident DJ, and who to look out for in Glasgow.
How has your 2010 been, so far? What are your plans for the rest of the year? 2010 has been great, so far. The Sub Club has been magic, with lots of great guests, including Delano Smith, Prosumer, Kenny Dixon and Derrick Carter, plus loads of local guys. I’ve been working steadily in the studio with both Graeme Clark (The Revenge), under our Burnt Island Casuals moniker, and Graeme Reedie (Silicone Soul). When I return from Australia, I’ll be heading up to Inverness for Rockness, then to Barcelona for Sonar. I’m also looking forward to The Garden Festival in Croatia and a Resident Advisor party in London, plus every Saturday at the Sub Club (of course). Twenty years is a long time in club land – what has kept you at Sub Club, and in Glasgow, for such a length of time? You've told us once, "Good People + Good Sound = Great Party." The time has pretty much flown by. It hardly seems that long. Apart from the above quote, you can add great doormen, bar staff and management. The owners are pretty cool as well – now might be a good time to ask for a wage rise! You've been a long-term resident at numerous clubs around the UK, from Plastic People in London to Sub Club. What sets Glasgow's electronic music scene apart from some of the UK's other cities? There is something in the Glasgow water. I can’t tell you what it is. I’m going to bottle it and sell it at festivals. I think the electronic music scene has died out a wee bit in some places in the UK, perhaps due to it being fashion-lead, as opposed to music-lead. How have Sunday nights at Sub Club been like since Optimo's departure? Keith and Johnnie from Optimo continue to promote Sunday nights at the Sub Club, they have just changed the name and the DJ policy slightly, so I am sure it will continue to be as mad as ever. How do you approach touring, as opposed to resident sets? Generally, when touring, somebody else does the warm up set, so you are usually being given a dance floor that has already been warmed-up and you are already in second or third gear. As residents, both Domenic and myself enjoy doing our own warm ups. I love doing warm ups as much as playing peak time sets. Finally, who else in Glasgow should we be keeping an eye out for? Glasgow has loads of pretty amazing young DJs, including my 19-year-old son Jasper, along with Telford, Junior and Esa, who all do regular sets at Subculture. Karim from Rub A Dub Records, Ronnie and Affi from Sunday Circus and Liam from Aberdeen are all great. Ali Ooft is another one. Loads of fairly established regulars like The Revenge, Milton Jackson, Craig Smith and Andy Seinan, plus heaps of others. Production-wise I'm loving the stuff from James Johnstone from Glasgow and Orlando B from Edinburgh.
Tickets to Harri's Sydney appearance at CO-OP next weekend are available through RA Tickets.
