  • The inaugural edition of Seattle's Substrata festival will take place from July 15th through 17th with headlining performances from Biosphere and Oren Ambarchi. The festival will be focused on a close-up experience between artists and the audience, and "subtle aesthetics that go beneath the surface and into deeper aural territories," hence the name Substrata (which may also refer to the title of Biosphere's iconic ambient album from 1997). The festival consists of Friday and Saturday evening events at the city's all-ages Chapel Performance Space and a Sunday "auditory field trip." Friday night will feature Australia's Ambarchi and the US artist Eluvium. Saturday's event sees Biosphere, real name Geir Jenssen, make his first stateside appearance in four years. He'll share the bill with a trio of like-minded artists including I3O, who might be better known for his works as The Sight Below; his debut album Glider will see a vinyl re-release on Ghostly International later that month. But perhaps the most interesting part of the festival will be Sunday's extracurricular activities. Jenssen, who is also an avid mountaineer, will take 15 guests to the Cascade mountain range for a day of hiking and field recording.
