  • Record Store Day will officially take place in Berlin for the first time next Saturday, November 5th. In a time when online shopping and digital files are the norm, Record Store Day celebrates the brick-and-mortar music shop as an enduring linchpin of artistic communities around the world. It began in the US in 2007, and has taken place in London for the past three years. Given the city's exceptional selection of record stores (not to mention its stubborn loyalty to the vinyl format), there's hardly a more natural place for the holiday than Berlin. The real substance of Record Store Day is this: on November 5th, participating shops will sell special one-off releases that will not be available on any other day. In-store appearances by artists further sweeten the deal. Most of Berlin's best-known record stores are on board, including Hard Wax, Rotation Records, Space Hall, HHV, Melting Point and a half dozen others. Roughly 30 labels are getting involved too, from big ones like Minus, !K7 and Innervisions to underground outfits like Workshop and Retreat. Details are scarce as to what each store will offer specifically: you'll just have to go and find out. Naturally, there will be a couple of parties to help you loosen up after a long day of flipping through bins, both hosted by OYE Records. The first takes place at the shop itself in Prenzlauer Berg, and features, among others, M.A.N.D.Y., Jesse Rose, Catz 'N Dogz, Cuthead and Philipp Demankowski from Uncanny Valley and Session Victim. That one starts at 4:00 PM, will have food from Flying Saucer Catering, and will be streamed on WahWah FM. The party carries on later that night at Kater Holzig with a few of the same artists.
