German newspapers are reporting the possibility of a massive street party called B-Parade taking place in Berlin this summer.
The last time this kind of event happened in the German capital was the summer of 2006, when the city hosted the Love Parade for the final time. Though run by a completely different organization, B-Parade would have all the same hallmarks that made Love Parade what it was: DJs on moving trucks, hundreds of thousands of revelers (up to 450,000) and a route that centers on the Victory Column. On the other hand, B-Parade organizers say their event would have a more diverse music policy and a heavy international focus, with "Länder-Trucks" devoted to music scenes in other countries.
The news comes less than two years after the tragedy at Love Parade in Duisburg, where overcrowding left 21 people dead and hundreds more injured. In the days after that incident, Rainer Schaller, the CEO of McFit and chief organizer of that year's event, said Love Parade would "forever be overshadowed by the accident." Whether B-Parade will be overshadowed too remains to be seen; full approval from local authorities is still pending.
If given the green light, B-Parade will take place in Berlin on July 21st, 2012.
