Touch will release a new drone album from the Porter Ricks member this month.
Köner is a prolific experimental artist with a special knack for ambient and drone. He's released dozens of his own solo records over the past 20 years, including a number of albums on Mille Plateaux in its heyday, though probably his most influential work was with Andy Mellwig as Porter Ricks, a production duo whose releases on Chain Reaction provided an early blueprint for atmospheric techno (especially the recently re-released Biokinetics).
Novaya Zemlya, which is Russian for "New World," takes its name from an archipelago off the coast of Russian in the Actic Ocean, Europe's easternmost point. The liner notes include an essay by Thierry Charollais, which explains the album this way: "Of course we find the unique Koneresque glowing drones that we know from his previous works. But we will also be touched by an unrevealed, barely perceptible sense of melody and harmony that Köner gradually developed since Kaamos (1998) and Nuuk (2004).
